HareNET echo conference system information text as of 09/01/92. The rules... behave reasonably, no outrageous flames, language should be kept within "GP" rated terms. You are expected to have a basic understanding of the QWK netmail interface. An occasional "belch" of dupes is understandable, however failure to correct the problem is not. No "illegal" acts may be transacted via this network, nor is any appearance of condoning and/or advocating these acts acceptable. This is a network that believes 99% of sysops are responsible people who have and maintain a reasonable set of standards on their BBS's. Thus, no long list of rules and what-if's should be needed. The over-riding philosophy is to keep this network simple and uncomplicated, as friendly and enjoyable as possible. Since HareNET is a very tight-knit network with a "short" conference list and we like it this way, members are expected to normally carry ALL HareNET conferences on line. The traffic in HareNET on a busy day rarely exceeds 50-60k at this time... so the traffic should not impose on anyone. Should someone wish to join HareNET who has software restrictions which prevent them from adding all of the HareNET conferences to their roster... then exception may be granted by the advisory board but frankly, if your software is that restrictive to you, maybe you ought to think about getting a different BBS package. In addition, members are expected to poll their hubs at least 3x a week. This is the minimum that we feel allows reasonable discussions to take place in a timely manner. HareNET was founded by Gordon Lincoln, of Compuphile BBS in Meadville, PA, in the second quarter of 1991. The exact date of the first transfers has been lost... :-) Charter members: David Bucci, Happy Hacker BBS, Ashtabula, OH (216)992-6930 Bob Gibbons, Brinkman's Hollow BBS, Lake Ariel, PA (717)689-3123 Gordon Lincoln is Net Coordinator and Compuphile BBS is the host system. Together with David Bucci and Bob Gibbons, these three SysOp's comprise the advisory board of the net. Any changes or additions to the network are subject to the review and approval of the advisory board. Membership to HareNET can be provisionally granted by any HareNET member willing to perform as the HUB for the new node. The following information should be mailed to the HareNET address immediately upon the HareNET member system's approval of a new node. A user account can be established on Compuphile BBS so that members may contact the host system, should their hub go down unexpectedly. Some of the questions... mother's maiden name and your birthday are part of the host system's Wildcat! software security functions, and need filled out for that reason... we are NOT that nosy as a rule! Please write down and save the Compuphile BBS phone numbers, for future reference. A member system SysOp is responsible for his/her users. In addition, the member system is responsible for the traffic of all systems that pull packets from their board. So, before you decide to hub for someone, remember... YOU will be held accountable for the traffic generated from that system. All requests made by a conference moderator/host (not all confs have hosts) must be complied with immediately. Should the user's SysOp wish to have the decision of a host reviewed, that member SysOp may request that the 3 member advisory board look into the specific situation and make a ruling in the matter. This is the only "appeal" process available. Arguing about any host's decision or request in the conference where the request/decision was made is considered extremely annoying behavior in and of itself. Thus a user who attempts to argue/debate a host's request/decision could possibly find the request/decision over-ruled but be locked out SOLELY due to their insisting upon arguing the point in the host's conference area. HareNET has had very few problem users... and grants considerable "slack" and benefit of the doubt to participants. User alias's are permitted as long as the originating BBS SysOp maintains a record of the user's real name and voice phone number on his system. This network has no intention of being a huge international net "someday"... but rather wishes to retain the friendly relaxed ambience of a gathering point of old friends... the electronic equivilent of the neighborhood watering hole. So kick your shoes off... and relax... this network is intended to be a simple extension of your local conferences. Nothing being discussed is gonna make the world safe for democracy... but you might find it a fun way to make some new modeming friends and kick around whatever topics you find of interest. New conferences & topics are decided by informal discussion in NetAdmin, moderator/host appointments are made by sysop recommendation and moderators serve solely at the discretion of the Network coordinator and/or the advisory board. Moderators serve for the benefit of the net, the net does NOT exist for the benefit of the moderator's ego. This issue is stressed because many of the member systems have been burned on this elsewhere, nobody likes an adamant "modem cop".
