QUAKERS IN NORTH CAROLINA and VICINITY Researchers with Quaker roots in the South should take note of the republication of the first volume of the ``Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy,'' covering North Carolina and parts of nearby states. This now hard-to-find book has been put back in circulation, opening new opportunities for many genealogists. The volume is a massive collection of records compiled by Thomas Wade Hinshaw. First published in 1936 and updated in 1948, it contains almost incalculable quantities of data. The book is 1,200 large pages of small typescript (paperback, it weighs in at six pounds!), and no one has even estimated how many individuals' birth, marriage, and death records are there. In fact, there is so much data that the index must of necessity be surnames only, or it would require a couple hundred more pages. The records in Volume One cover three centuries, from the mid-1600's into the early 1900's. They are taken from the monthly meetings of the Religious Society of Friends in 33 gatherings. Most are in North Carolina, but related meetings in South Carolina and eastern Tennessee are also reported. Mr. Hinshaw pored over thousands of records of these meetings, extracting anything that might be of genealogical significance -- not only the myriad vital records, but also many notices of families moving and arriving, reports of misconduct, members being disowned, and other noteworthy events or actions. They are arranged by meeting (like a ``parish''), and within meetings, by surname, then by date, making searches for known ancestors easy. ``Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, Volume One'' should be arriving in libraries with genealogical and local history specialties, or can be ordered from Genealogical Publishing Company, Dept. SM, 1001 North Calvert Street, Baltimore, Md., 21202-3897 (toll free 1-800-727-6687), at $75 plus $2.50 postage and handling. --J.F.S.
