BOOK REVIEW: Quaker Genealogy The third volume in Genealogical Publishing Company's mammoth project of reprinting a mammoth work, The Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy, is available. This 540-page edition, compiled by William Wade Hinshaw, covers extreme southeastern New York -- the monthly meetings at New York City, and at Flushing, Westbury, and Jericho on Long Island -- starting from 1657 running to the 1930s. As with the volumes on North Carolina and Pennsylvania published earlier this year, Volume III contains thousands of birth, marriage, burial and membership records of the Quaker groups. According to the New York Genealogical and Biographical Record, ``The third volume is particularly welcome since it includes New York City and Long Island records so long difficult of access.'' Because it is about half the pages of volumes I and II, which run close to 1,200 pages and which cost $75 each, Volume III costs $45. All editions are paperback reproductions of the originals -- in this case, the 1940 first edition. (There are no updates, addendums or corrections in this volume.) And as with the other editions, it is fully indexed by surname only. If you can't find them at your library, any of the three Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy volumes now in print may be ordered from many genealogical societies that carry books or directly from Genealogical Publishing Company, Dept. SM, 1001 North Calvert Street, Baltimore, Md., 21202-3897 (toll free 1-800-727-6687). --J.F.S.
