SCOTS ON THE CHESAPEAKE Another nitch in the early settlement of the United States has been uncovered by Scottish researcher David Dobson. And if you have roots in the Scots who settled in the Chesapeake Bay area, you will want to check out his latest work, ``Scots on the Chesapeake.'' Scots began arriving in Maryland and Virginia as early as 1607's Jamestown settlement, but the flow of them greatly increased after 1650 when many were banished from their homeland as political or religious undesirables. And after the 1707 abolition of the Navigation Acts, which has restricted trade between Scotland and the colonies, many more Scots came over -- a good number as tobacco merchants. Conducting research in his native Scotland, and in the U.S., Canada, and England, Mr. Dobson has compiled a listing of several thousands Scots who were known to have lived in the region between 1607 and 1830. Information on each may include -- if known -- details of birth, marriage, and death; occupation; age; date of emigration; place of settlement; and family relationships. Here's an example of an average listing: ROSS, THOMAS, b(orn) 1683, laborer, res(idence), Aberdeen, Jacobite, tr(ansported) 22 Apr. 1747, fr(om) Liverpool to Md., on Johnson, arr(ived) Port Oxford, Md. 5 Aug. 1747.
