NEW BEDFORD, MA SAILING SHIP REGISTERS by Clifford Sayre 16 June 1990 ------------------------------------------------ Ahoy Maties - I have three volumes of WPA transcribed archives (ca 1939) on the ships registered in New Bedford, Massachusetts, 1796-1939. There are about 1200 pages of listings, alphabetized by ship name. Each listing gives: name, rig, hailing port, date and place of building, place of registry, tonnage and dimensions, names and towns of masters (captains) and owner(s). The masters and owners names are indexed for each volume. There were 20 other districts in Massachusetts, in addition to New Bedford. However, ships built in New Bedford were usually temporarily registered there, as were other ships temporarily registered there for various reasons. For example the 1796-1850 registrations include over 1200 ships from 182 different ports. There are three search parameters: person name, ship name, time period. I can search with only a person's name in the index of each of the three volumes. If you know a time period, 1796-1850, 1851-1865, or 1866-1939, that will narrow the search. If you know the ship, they are alphabetized in each volume. Depending on the number of citations I find, we can decide what to do. The entries are only about 10 lines long, but some ships were reregistered several times. In addition to having a ship named after him, (i.e. the whaling ship in Mystic Seaport, Connecticut), Charles W. Morgan was owner or part owner of four or five other ships. Anyone related to an Edward D. Mandell has about 80 entries in one volume (about 13 ships) and about the same number in another volume. Clifford L.
