New Jersey Research Tips by Dorothy Sminkey Fri Jun 26 1992 ------------------------------- If I were researching early New Jersey history, and wanted to avail myself of the best one-stop repository of applicable materials, I would go to the State Library Building in Trenton, New Jersey. There, within one modern building, are the State Archives and the State Library...addresses as follows: State of New Jersey Department of State Division of Archives and Records Management Bureau of Archives and Records Preservation State Library Building 185 West State Street, CN-307 Trenton, New Jersey 08625-0307 and New Jersey State Library State Library Building 185 West State Street, CN-520 Trenton, New Jersey 08625-0520 The New Jersey State Library is the published counterpart of the New Jersey State Archives. The contained collections include maps, atlases, genealogies, histories, periodicals, guidebooks, and indexes. There are also newspaper clipping files, phone books, directories, and folders of material and correspondence arranged by family name, as well as microfilms of the federal and state censuses. The New Jersey State Library is one of the two depositories for the State's DAR collection. As you can deduce from their holdings, genealogists learn much by researching in the New Jersey State Library. I have done so on several occasions. The facility is big, but, not crowded. Access to the books is permitted...so, one can brouse and come upon "things." The staff, in a word, is "outstanding." Most personnel will bend over backwards to help you. Desks are conveniently located throughout the library. It's quiet and peaceful, there, too. The Camden County Historical Society at Park Boulevard and Euclid Avenue in Camden, New Jersey 08103 and the library within the Burlington County College at Pemberton-Browns Mills Road in Pemberton, New Jersey 08068 are two additional organizations that possess much material relating to early New Jersey history. I've spent time researching in both places and obtained "good" data from their extensive collections. ================================= Date: Mon Jun 29 1992 09:18:45 From: Bob Gleason To: Dorothy Sminkey Subj: New Jersey ------------------------------- And, Dorothy, don't overlook: New Jersey Historical Society 230 Broadway Newark, NJ 07104 (201) 483-3939 Also a very extensive collection on New Jersey History as well as an excellent genealogical collection.
