Florence Marmor Dec-16-92 02:40PM Bruce Kahn Dec-18-92 05:00PM Subj: MOKOM SHOLOM CEM. First, though, there is no office on the grounds. The building is there, but in dangerous condition having been gutted. There is a new sign at Acacia stating that this is the office for Mokom Sholom. Records for Mokom Sholom are not at Acacia, though, they are at the office in Manhattan. I will finish this later. The cemetery is at 80th St. between Liberty and Pitkin Avenues in Ozone Park, Queens, N.Y. Telephone # 718-845-6030. It was founded by Congregation Darech Amuno which sold it and then it fell into bankruptcy. Founded approx. 1869. None of the oldest graves exist as the Rabbi who purchased the cemetery removed all the monuments for those graves. No one knows what was done with them. There are some (very few) from the 1870's. There are 2 big empty stretches that used to have monuments that no longer do. In one of the stretches there are a few graves left, possibly about 25. I have not actually counted. Talk is now that this land has been filled in with more earth and it will be reused for burials. I don't know if this will actually happen as there was talk before about using this land for condos. Societies copied from gateposts. Almost no information can be obtained from the office. Main Aisle leading from entrance on Pitkin Ave. L. Agudath Achim Chasad Shel Emeth Gate 1 R. It (and Acacia) are now being run by a Mr. Jacobson who has offices at United Hebrew where he is on the Board of Directors and who rents space for his cemetery operations from them. The others are mostly private purchases of cemetery plots, some are purchases by organizations. --- Squish v1.01 * Origin: The Dorsai Diplomatic Mission (1:278/706) From: Florence Marmor Feb-04-93 03:03PM To: Bruce Kahn Feb-09-93 02:51AM Subj: DEEDS Alphabetical List of Deeds Grantor Congregation Darech Amuno to Grantee Congregation Resesvoir ner Br Nor u edcrunz verein ( Rzeszower Verein) 10/20/1890 recorded 12/26/1890. M. The last two pertain to Mokom Sholom having fallen into bankruptcy and being in the hands of the New York State Cemetery Commission in the person of Richard Brady who was the director of the Cemetery Commission at that time and was running the cemetery. The cemetery was turned over to the Avenue M Jewish Center of Brooklyn in the person of Rabbi Sidney Applebaum. Rabbi Applebaum ran Mokom Sholom until he fell afoul of the then Attorney General of New York, Louis Lefkowitz, for misappropriation of perpetual care funds, etc. (This is a family board with some sensitive stomachs. I will Netmail this kind of stuff if you wish to peruse or mail photostats of newspaper articles. It is kind-of grisly.) Court case evolved and Rabbi Applebaum never admitted doing anything wrong, was ordered to pay back some of the money and stay away from the cemetery which had been inspected by a bunch of Rabbis on the orders of State Attorney General Lefkowitz and had been declared "unfit for burials" from newspaper accounts. Darech Amuno Synagogue (the former owners) made no claim for return of the cemetery and it was then turned over to plot owners to run it. This didn't work, and 4 years ago it was turned over to Mr. David Jacobson, CEO Mokom Sholom Cemetery Association, with rented space at United Hebrew an organization, Mr. Jacobson is on the Board of Directors of. A plaque on the ground near the abandoned and gutted cemetery office of Mokom Sholom states "Improvements accomplished under the supervision of Eli Sobel, President, Joseph Jacoby, Treasurer, Harry Edwards, Secretary and William Gold, Superintendent. William Gold was the father of Morton Gold who ran the cemetery after his father died. They were in the monument business and Morton Gold was active in show business and ran fundraisers, etc. He was also active in the affairs of Jamaica Hospital which is not far from the cemetery. They ran the cemetery for Darech Amuno which began operating c. 1869 at the cemetery. Darech Amuno was the first synagogue in New York to give free burials to indigent Jews. --- TBBS v2.1/NM * Origin: KinQuest <718-998-6303> Featuring ADOPTEES & GENEALOGY (1:278/611)
