Introduction ------------ VEDIT is both a full featured general purpose text editor and a unique universal file editor. As a text editor, VEDIT is intended for both program development and text preparation. It is ideal for writing assembly language and structured programs (C, Pascal, PL/I) and lengthy documents such as reports or manuscripts. It is also well suited for the preparation of text files being used with Desktop Publishing packages such as Xerox's Ventura Publisher (tm). VEDIT's universal file editing capabilities let you edit ANY text, data or binary file you will ever encounter. This includes mainframe, database (both variable-length and fixed-length records), postscript, plotter output, executable (.EXE) and other non-standard files. VEDIT can edit huge files up to 2 Gigabytes in size and supports unlimited line lengths. While you can't alter a file on CD-ROM, you can quickly browse the CD-ROM, or copy a CD-ROM file to your hard disk and edit it there. Compared to a traditional text editor, VEDIT can effortlessly edit data and huge files that other text editors can't handle. Compared to traditional disk utilities, VEDIT has a full range of editing capabilities such as sophisticated searching and block operations not found in disk utilities. Simple, Yet Powerful -------------------- VEDIT is simple enough to learn and use for the novice, yet has the speed, flexibility and power to satisfy the most demanding computer professional. It offers a rich assortment of editing capabilities, simple menu operation, complete on-line help facilities, and the ability to edit text and data files up to 2 Gigabytes in size. VEDIT's multi-mode editing and display capabilities let you effortlessly edit any file in the most efficient manner possible. Edit in five different ASCII modes, EBCDIC (used by IBM mainframes) or Hexadecimal, or split the screen for any combination of modes. File modes support DOS, UNIX and Max text, binary, plus variable length and fixed-length-records data files. VEDIT lets you perform near-miracles on data files. If you have ever had to patch a corrupted database file, convert a huge mainframe file to a DOS text file, perform a last minute search/replace on a 400 Megabyte file, examine a Postscript file, or similar task, you probably wished for the kind of speed and capability that only VEDIT offers. VEDIT really shines in speed, especially when editing large files. For example, VEDIT can perform a global search and replace on a 10 Megabyte file (180,000 occurrences) in less than 3 minutes. Other text editors, assuming that they can edit the file at all, take between 2 and 30 HOURS! Plain and simple, VEDIT is the fastest editor available. Integrated Compiler Support --------------------------- VEDIT has the ability to create an integrated programming environment by running your favorite compilers, assemblers, linkers, debuggers, and "make" programs from within the editor. Any compilation errors are automatically tracked. This can significantly speed up program development. The DOS version of VEDIT includes the innovative V-SWAP (tm) program. V-SWAP not only swaps VEDIT out of memory when running large compilers, debuggers and other programs from within VEDIT, but can even swap out many TSRs (Terminate-Stay-Resident programs). For example, V-SWAP can swap out pop-up utilities and network drivers which are not needed during compilation. Totally Configurable, Yet Instant Startup ----------------------------------------- The comprehensive configuration lets you completely determine your own keyboard layout and select numerous default settings to configure VEDIT to your particular hardware, applications and personal preferences. By using the available options and "keystroke macros", VEDIT can very closely emulate other editors and word processors. An easy to use installation program for the IBM PC permits a quick, menu driven selection of the most common configurations of VEDIT. This includes selecting from the recommended keyboard layout or from a Brief, WordStar or Word Perfect layout. Since all configuration settings and the keyboard layout are normally built into the VEDIT.EXE file and VEDIT.EXE is only 85K in size, VEDIT starts up instantly. Note: Configuration changes cannot be saved in this demo version of VEDIT PLUS. VEDIT Family of Editors ----------------------- VEDIT is one of the VEDIT Family of Editors that also includes VEDIT Jr. and VEDIT PLUS. The VEDIT family is available for virtually every computer running under the PCDOS, MS-DOS (IBM and non-IBM compatible), UNIX 286/386/486, XENIX, QNX, Concurrent DOS, FlexOS and IBM 4680 operating systems.
