What are their charters?ã 2: How do I get hold of a copy of the Net..Book?ã 3: What is the address for the mailing list?ã 4: How do I access the Games BBS?ã 5: Are there any clubs for roleplayers besides the one run by TSR, Inc?ã 6: Does anybody know what E. Where Do I get it? ã* - new or updated itemsãã1: What are the rec.games.frp.* newsgroups for? What are their charters?ããNAME: rec.games.frp.advocacyãCHARTER: Frequently discussion on rec.games.frp amounts to vigorouslyã overstated disagreement about the quality or lack thereof ofã a particular game system or game company. This unmoderatedã discussion newsgroup will give readers of the rec.games.frpã hierarchy an outlet for such material. This newsgroup wouldã be expected to hold such lines of discussion as: Championsã versus GURPS; AD&Dv1 versus AD&Dv2; AD&D stinks; classã systems versus skill based systems; game critiques wanted;ã mine are bigger than yours; and so on.ããNAME: rec.games.frp.announce (Moderated)ãMODERATOR: Coyt Watters ã backup by Joshua Levy ãCHARTER: This group is intended for all announcements relating toã roleplaying games. This may include, but is not limited to,ã game release announcements, pbem announcements, conventionã announcements, and any other events. Discussion of materialã in this newsgroup should be done in the appropriateã roleplaying discussion group. Please direct followup lines asã appropriate.ããNAME: rec.games.frp.archives (Moderated)ãMODERATOR: Mitch Gold ã backup by Steve Mansfield ãCHARTER: This newsgroup will serve as a temporary archive for postingsã that should be archived on one of the anonymous ftp orã mail-server sites, and which do not belong in one of theã other roleplaying newsgroups. Therefore only finished workã such as net.books, campaign background, convention modules,ã the tabolport project, fiction, poetry, compilations, and soã on should be posted here. This newsgroup is not forã discussion purposes, and discussion of anything in thisã newsgroup should take place in the appropriate roleplayingã discussion group. Please direct followup lines appropriately.ããNAME: rec.games.frp.cyberãCHARTER: This moderated newsgroup is for the discussion of Cyberpunk ã specific topics. This group replaces the moderated groupã rec.games.cyber. Topics of a General Interest should be ã directed to rec.games.frp.misc.ããNAME: rec.games.frp.dndãCHARTER: This unmoderated discussion newsgroup is for discussion ofã the official rules and settings of the D&D family ofã roleplaying games, produced by TSR, Inc., includingã Collector's Edition Dungeons and Dragons (D&D), Basic D&D,ã Advanced Dungeons and Dragons (AD&D), and AD&D Secondã Edition. This proposed newsgroup would include discussion ofã TSR's rules and products and compatible products, such as:ã character classes; character races; monsters; magic spells;ã weapons; Greyhawk; the Forgotten Realms; the Known World;ã Dark Sun; Spelljammer; RavenLoft; Hollow World; City State ofã the Invincible Overlord; and so on. Crossposting between thisã group and other groups in the rec.games.frp hierarchy isã discouraged, however issues of general interest that happenã to involve a D&D rulebook or setting are more than welcome.ããNAME: rec.games.frp.marketplaceãCHARTER: This unmoderated newsgroup is intended to hold For Sale andã Wanted postings for roleplaying game materials.ããNAME: rec.games.frp.miscãCHARTER: This is a discussion group for all aspects of roleplayingã games which are not subsumed within another rec.games.frp.*ã newsgroup. It fully replaces rec.games.frp within theã roleplaying newsgroup hierarchy. The acronym "frp" refers toã Fantasy Role-Playing, but this does not mean that the scopeã of the group is restricted to pseudo medieval settings whereã magic is common and powerful. The common misuse of the wordã "fantasy" comes from the marketing distinction between theã literary genres of science fiction and fantasy. Fantasyã actually means anything that is set in a time or place thatã is **in some essential way** unlike our own. Science Fictionã fits this definition of fantasy, as do other genres includingã Horror, Tolkeinesque High Fantasy, and Westerns. Lines ofã discussion in this newsgroup can be expected to include,ã among other topics: roleplaying advice; gamemastering advice;ã reviews of roleplaying products; scenario ideas; rules;ã errata; gaming anecdotes; and many peripherally connectedã subjects. Crossposting between this group and otherã roleplaying discussion groups is to be discouraged.ããIn addition, there are a few groups which, while not part of the actualãhierarchy of rec.games.frp.*, are close cousins of the core groups:ãã alt.games.frp.live-action is an alternative group (and thus hasã a more restricted distribution than the core groups) for theã discussion of issues related specifically to live action ã roleplay. Discussion of live action is also welcome on theã .misc group.ãã rec.games.design is a "multicultural" group which is used to ã discuss issues of game design. This group is visited by ã designers of both computer and traditional games. FUDGE (q.v.)ã was designed, in part, on this newsgroup.ãã2: How do I get hold of a copy of the Net..Book?ããA: First off, thanks for reading the administrative articles beforeã posting. One of the administrative articles is entitledã "Net.*.Books" and contains details of how to get at the Netã Books, suprisingly enough. Please check in there before posting aã request to rec.games.frp.misc.ããã3: What is the address for the mailing list?ããA: Once again you'll find the answer in another of theã administrative articles, in this case the two part "FRP Mailingã Lists and Digests" posting. If the answer isn't in there, goã ahead and ask the net at large - if you get results, please letã us know so we can update the postings.ããã4: How do I access the Games BBS?ããA: First off, look in the "BBS's of interest to gamers" posting,ã where a number of games companies' BBS's are listed.ããã5: Are there any clubs for roleplayers besides the one run by TSR, Inc?ããA: Yes. There are several. The National Association for theã Advancement of Role Playing (NAARP) is nominally an associationã for the USA only, but accepts members from other countries.ã CARpg, which is associated with the NAARP, is the Committee forã the Advancement of Roleplaying games, and is a strong pro-gamingã voice in the fight against BADD and other groups that think thatã roleplaying is evil. The following is some info for the NAARP.ãã The National Association for the Advancement of Role-Playing, Incã is a national non-profit organization dedicated to promoting theã hobby of role-playing. NAARP provides its members with an annualã membership directory, so game players can contact each other.ã NAARP publishes a quarterly newsletter featuring information onã upcoming releases from the industry, and news about conventions.ã NAARP is also dedicated to educating the public about the hobbyã through tournaments and public discussions.ãã If you'd like a membership form and more information, send anã SASE toãã NAARP, Incã P.O.Box 2752ã Chapel Hill, NC 27515-2752ãã or if you have specific questions E-Mail toãã USENET chatham!rcarden@duke.cs.duke.eduãã WWIV Net 94@9955ããã6: Does anybody know what E. Gary Gygax is doing these days?ããA: As of May 17, 1992 EGG has completed a multi-genre fantasyã roleplaying game for Game Designer's Workshop to be calledã Dangerous Dimensions. June 5: The name was changed to Dangerousã Journeys, rumors were that TSR had some problems with the "D&D"ã abbreviation. It has been released and is now on the market.ãã7: Does anybody know what Steve Perrin/Luise Perenne/Chaosium are doingã these days?ããA: Gossip follows:ãã Call of Cthulhu is still their best selling game. Avalon Hill hasã a new editor for RuneQuest, Ken Rolston, who is planning onã publishing several *quality* supplements in 1992.ãã As of summer '91, Chaosium saw a reorg in its managementã structure. The nomenclature now conforms to present day businessã conventions. Lynn Willis is now CEO of the company, with Gregã Stafford stepping back as President, now working under the titleã of Chief of Design. Charlie Krank is now manager of marketingã and sales.ãã Yes, the two are man and wife, but still, her name is Perenne.ãã Steve Perrin left Chaosium after the failure of SuperWorld to beã able to work for different companies on a free-lance basis. He'sã done some stuff for TSR (Such as the Lankhmar products), and youã may find his name on products from other companies. He's alsoã rumored to have done some teevee writing (kidvid), and now to beã working in the computer game industry. He may have done work forã Spectrum Holobyte. He is still involved with gaming (though hisã company contract prohibited him from doing any professional workã in it) and is part of the con committee for DunDraCon every year.ãã Ran into Steve and Luis Perrin at the Oak, Ash, and Thorn concertã at Freight and Salvage a few weeks ago. They're old friends ofã my wife from her early SCA days. If I remember right, Steve saidã he was writing material for a computer games company and Luis wasã doing some sort of commercial art. But I may not have that rightã in detail...ãã Well, when I'm in the SF Bay Area, I game with Steve Perrin andã his "friday night gaming crew". They mostly play Champions; theã group is pretty much "all GM's" at this point, so they rotateã Game Mastering every couple of weeks. About half the DunDraConã committee is in the gaming group, I'd estimate.ãã scoops are from:ã henkl@Holland.Sun.COM (Henk Langeveld)ã Wayne.Shaw@f315.n103.z1.fidonet.org (Wayne Shaw)ã Nicolai.Shapero@f524.n102.z1.fidonet.org (Nicolai Shapero)ã Ed Allen allen@enzyme.berkeley.eduã Donald Tsang tsang@june.cs.washington.eduããã8: What is Fluff?ããA: Fluff is the polite net.word for stories based on roleplayingã campaigns. Net roleplayers are violently divided on the qualityã and utility of stories on the network. If you post your storiesã to rec.games.frp.misc please put STORY: at the beginning of theã subject line so that those who hate fluff can avoid it and thoseã who love it can find it, and use a consistent title so that thoseã who like or dislike your stories can identify them quickly.ãã9: What is this rec.games.rpg newsgroup I keep seeing mentioned?ããA: rec.games.rpg is a defunct newsgroup that was created (amongstã some controversy) a few years ago and then promptly deleted fromã most of the news sites in the world. However, some sites stillã carry it. It only propagates to 20% or so of the net.world. Ifã you want to discuss roleplaying games but are not interested inã the "fantasy" genre your best bet is to participate onã rec.games.frp.misc instead of trying to use rec.games.rpg, whichã reaches only a fraction of the readership of the official groups.ãã10: What's a Cthulhu?ããA: H.P.Lovecraft wrote a number of scary science fiction storiesã in the early twentieth century. These stories, along with othersã written in conscious imitation of Lovecraft by like mindedã writers, have come to be known as the "Cthulhu Mythos" ofã stories after Cthulhu, who is an awful, terrible being from theã stars who sleeps in his temple in a sunken island much likeã Atlantis in the seas of the Earth.ãã11: I want to sell some of my old game stuff. How should I go about it?ããA11: Post to rec.games.frp.marketplace. There are several things thatã you should do if you are selling items through news: (1)ã describe each item you have for sale, including complete,ã accurate name and publication information (2) if you have firmã prices or minimum bids for items, put them in your posting. (3)ã supply a valid internet return address.ãã12: What is Munchkinism? What does the Wizard of Oz have to do withã roleplaying games?ããA12: Munchkinism is similar to "Monty Haul" gaming; however it involvesã playing at incredible power levels purely for the sake ofã watching the terrain get blown away by player characters whoã are unstoppable. Munchkinism also involves "rules rape," wherein ã players milk every advantage out of the rules. Often a munchkin ã will carry a favorite character from game to game, usually with ã the maximum allowable ability scores, skill ratings, etc - and ã enough hardware/magic to destroy the planet four times over.ãã13: I've run out of adventure ideas for my game. Does anybody have ideasã for new plots?ããA13: There are only so many times you can use the same plot patternã before it grows tiresome. So use different plot patterns.ãã This is condensed from Georges Polti's _The 36 Dramatic Plots_.ãã Each short plot description starts with the title of the plotã pattern. After a hyphen the main characters to be found in theã plot are given, separated by commas.ãã Supplication - Persecutor, Suppliant, a Power in Authorityã Deliverance - Unfortunates, Threatener, Rescuerã Revenge - Avenger, Criminalã Vengeance by Family upon Family - Avenging Kinsman, Guiltyã Kinsman, Relativeã Pursuit - Fugitive from Punishment, Pursuerã Victim of Cruelty or Misfortune - Unfortunates, Master or Unluckyã Personã Disaster - Vanquished Power, Victorious Power or Messengerã Revolt - Tyrant, Conspirator(s)ã Daring Enterprise - Bold Leader, Goal, Adversaryã Abduction - Abductor, Abducted, Guardianã Enigma - Interrogator, Seeker, Problemã Obtaining - Two or more Opposing Parties, Object, maybe anã Arbitratorã Familial Hatred - Two Family Members who hate each otherã Familial Rivalry - Preferred Kinsman, Rejected Kinsman, Objectã Murderous Adultery - Two Adulterers, the Betrayedã Madness - Madman, Victimã Fatal Imprudence - Imprudent person, Victim or lost objectã Involuntary Crimes of Love - Lover, Beloved, Revealerã Kinsman Kills Unrecognized Kinsman - Killer, Unrecognized Victim,ã Revealerã Self Sacrifice for an Ideal - Hero, Ideal, Person or Thingã Sacrificedã Self Sacrifice for Kindred - Hero, Kinsman, Person or Thingã Sacrificedã All Sacrificed for Passion - Lover, Object of Passion, Person orã Thing Sacrificedã Sacrifice of Loved Ones - Hero, Beloved Victim, Need forã Sacrificeã Rivalry Between Superior and Inferior - Superior, Inferior,ã Objectã Adultery - Deceived Spouse, Two Adulterersã Crimes of Love - Lover, Beloved, theme of Dissolutionã Discovery of Dishonor of a Loved One - Discoverer, Guilty Oneã Obstacles to Love - Two Lovers, Obstacleã An Enemy Loved - Beloved Enemy, Lover, Haterã Ambition - An Ambitious Person, Coveted Thing, Adversaryã Conflict with a God - Mortal, Immortalã Mistaken Jealousy - Jealous One, Object of Jealousy, Supposedã Accomplice, Author of Mistakeã Faulty Judgement - Mistaken One, Victim of Mistake, Author ofã Mistake, Guilty Personã Remorse - Culprit, Victim, Interrogatorã Recovery of a Lost One - Seeker, One Foundã Loss of Loved Ones - Kinsman Slain, Kinsman Witness, Executionerãã14: What game magazines are out there?ããA14: Here is a limited list. The editor Tomã Harris has a net address and will accept submissions for publicationã via e-mail Articles regarding Dark Conspiracy and Cadillacs andã Dinosaurs will be accepted as well. S-mail address is 1837ã Paddington, Naperville, IL 60563.ããã Space Gamerã P.O. Box 11424ã Burbank, CA 91510-1424ã (818) 845-4201ããã15: I've heard of the Arduin Grimoire but am unable to find it. Where is it?ããA15: When Dave Hargrave passed away the rights to the Arduin lineã were split between two companies. The two companies' addressesã are as follows:ãã Dragon Tree Pressã 118 Sayles Blvdã Abilene, TX 79605ãã Has rights to Arduin Grimoires IV, V, VI, VII, and VIII (or 5-8)ãã Grimoire Gamesã POB 4363ã Berkeley, CA 94704ãã Has rights to the original Arduin Trilogy, and the Arduinã Adventure, which turns Arduin from a D&D supplement (WHICH ITã REALLY IS, down to reproducing the typos in the original D&Dã monster listings) to a free-standing game.ããã16: What (or who) is Monty Haul?ã ãA16: Monty Hall was the host of an American game show calledã _Let's Make a Deal_, which was on in the 60s and 70s. Peopleã would dress up in stupid costumes and come onto the showã and Monty would hand them money then talk them into tradingã it for whatever's behind curtain number one, number two, or ã number three, or you can keep the money, or you can take thisã box right here. He would keep on getting them to trade, someã times letting them see what they had so far and sometimes not,ã until they declined to trade any more. Sometimes they wouldã win a car, a hawaiian vacation, an airstream mobile home, andã other times they would win a goat, a bucket of rubber monkeys,ã or a year's supply of automotive wax. The prizes were random,ã sometimes good, sometimes bad. Gary Gygax dubbed a style ofã play of D&D where the gamemaster hides treasures behind someã doors and monsters behind others Monty Haul style, punningã on the game show's host.ãã17: I want a group dedicated to my favorite game, how do I do it?*ããA17a: The simple answer is not to do it at all, you'll save yourself a lotã of grief and pain if you learn to use a KILLFILE to limit the volumeã of information you receive. The current hierarchy was forged after aã long discussion and massive flaming. If you insist on trying, pleaseã read the guidelines for group creation over on news.answers. In aã nutshell, you have to start a request for discussion on news.groups,ã which must be at least two weeks long. In the rec.games.frp.* is wasã considerably longer, because of all the bugs which were ironed out. ã After getting an acceptable charter and namespace figured out, thenã a VOTE must be run. This vote has to meet certain criteria toã fulfill the guidelines for group creation. If, and only when theã vote is considered VALID, i.e. there are no legitimate complaintsã about the voting, the new group is created. ALT groups are easier toã start, because there is no network control over ALT groups, howeverã ALT is only carried on about 10% of the net.ããA17b: Check the fourth and fifth parts of this informational bulletin,ã ROLEPLAYING MAILING LISTS AND DIGESTS, there is a good chance theã system you want to discuss already has a mailing list dedicated toã it. Mailing lists send the postings directly to your mailer, ã rather than reading them through netnets.ãã18: What's the Facts on ICE and bankruptcy? *ããA18: John Nephew jnephew@carleton.edu:ã Someone raised the question of ICE's solvency. I asked Bruce Harlickã of Hero Games (BruceHH@aol.com) about these rumors, and he responded:ãã >ICE is NOT in Chapter 7, Chapter 11, or Chapter 13. They were in aã >voluntary-type of receivership, but it wasn't a formal one. They areã >out of that now. They are even starting to pay off their back authorã >debt! Or so I've heard. ICE should be in fine financial shape.ãã So that should settle the rumors. :)ãã19: What is FUDGE? Where do I get it?ããA19: Here's an extraction from:ã "FUDGE Frequently Asked Questions, (answers by Steffan O'Sullivan):"ããQ1. What is FUDGE?ã===================ãA1. FUDGE is a free role-playing game (face-to-face table gaming, thatã is - not a computer game or Live Roleplaying Game). It is just aã gaming "engine" - each GM must provide the "body" of the RPG inã order to make it work. A certain amount of customization work isã necessary in order to use FUDGE, and many things are leftã unstated: the GM will have to fudge a lot.ãã However, it provides a simple, word-based mechanism for creatingã characters and resolving actions that is very easy to use inã almost any given situation.ãã FUDGE stands for:ã Freeform (simple, laid-back, not rules-heavy. Customizable toã taste.)ã Universal (usable with any genre.)ã Donated (it costs nothing, and may be reproduced and given toã players legally.)ã Gaming (role-playing gaming, that is.)ã Engine (it's just the basic mechanism for character creationã and development, as well as action resolution. Noã world details are provided.)ãã FUDGE was written by, and is copyright by, Steffan O'Sullivan.ã Much valuable aid was received from many people onã rec.games.design, most of whom are credited in the actual FUDGEã manuscript.ããQ2. Who is the target audience?ã================================ãA2. FUDGE is for experienced GMs, though it can be used with noviceã players. You must enjoy making decisions on the fly in order toã run FUDGE. It's also not for those who want extreme detail. Youã must enjoy either creating or adapting your own world background,ã as none is provided (but sample characters from a number of genresã are included).ããQ4. Where can I get it?ã========================ãA4. FUDGE is available via anonymous ftp from:ãã Site: oz.plymouth.eduã Directory: pub/fudgeãã It is in a single, compressed, tarred file called fudge.tar.Z.ãã Ask your sys admin if you don't know how to ftp or extract filesã from a tarred, compressed file.ãã Basically, after you get the file via ftp (be sure to enter "binary"ã before getting the file), you first uncompress it then untar it:ã uncompress fudge.tar.Zã tar xf fudge.tarããQ5. Can I contribute?ã======================ãA5. Yes, you can. I am acting as "editor" (or "filter" if you prefer)ã for suggestions and feedback. This is very subjective, however,ã so don't be offended if your suggestions don't make it into theã main text. My main criteria for including rules are simplicityã and necessity. At this point, new suggestions won't make it inã the main text for a few months, at best.ãã It is easier to contribute to the Addenda that is attached toã FUDGE. I still filter things, but am more tolerant. Simply writeã a clear, concise rules addition, in ASCII, using existing Addendaã sections as guidelines. E-mail any submissions to:ã sos@oz.plymouth.edu.ãã (MS-DOS ASCII or XyWrite format submissions may be sent to:ã Steffan O'Sullivan, P.O. Box 465, Plymouth, NH 03264 USA.)ããã
