THE COBB GROUP PROUDLY PRESENTS Windows Software Connection November 1992 ************************************************************ What's on this diskette? The useable files (utilities, fonts, etc.) on this disk are stored in self-extracting archive (SEA) files. Each SEA file has an EXE extension in its filename. In order to work with the useable files, you must first extract them from the SEA files. To extract files from an SEA file, copy the SEA file to the directory (most likely on your hard drive) where you want to store the useable files, make that directory the working directory, then type the name of the SEA file (without the EXE extension) and press [Enter]. The useable files will then automatically extract themselves from the SEA file. For example, suppose you want to work with the useable files stored in an SEA file named FONTS.EXE, and you want to store them in the C:\WINDOWS directory. To use these files, you first copy the FONTS.EXE file from your Windows Software Connection diskette to the C:\WINDOWS directory on your hard drive. Assuming the Windows Software Connection diskette is in your A drive, you can use the DOS command "COPY A:FONTS.EXE C:\WINDOWS" to copy the SEA file. Then, you enter "C:" at the DOS command line to make the C drive the working drive (if it is not already). Next, you enter the command "CD \WINDOWS" to make \WINDOWS the working directory. Finally, you type "FONTS" at the DOS prompt to extract the useable files stored in FONTS.EXE. After you extract the useable files from an SEA file, you can delete the SEA file from your working directory. You'll still have the original SEA file on your Windows Software Connection diskette if you ever need to reinstall the useable files. For safety's sake, we suggest you make a copy of the original Windows Software Connection diskette and copy SEA files from the duplicate to your hard drive when you want to install software. That way, you can save the original diskette as a backup just in case anything ever damages the duplicate diskette while you're installing software. VBDLL.EXE VBDLL.EXE (VBRUN100.DLL) is the Visual Basic library that you need to run programs written in Visual Basic. In past disks, we have included programs that needed VBRUN100.DLL to run, but didn't feel it was necessary to include it, because of its ready availability. Once you have extracted VBRUN100.DLL from the SEA, place it in your windows directory, and any program requiring VBRUN100.DLL to run will be able to find and use it. VBRUN100.DLL is freeware, so there are no restrictions on your use of it. LLOCK.EXE LLOCK.EXE (Metz Lock) is a complete and configurable locking utility for the Windows environment. Metz Lock allows you to lock your PC on demand, according to a schedule, or whenever it is left idle. Metz Lock will also restrict mouse activity and disable CTRL-ALT-DEL reboots. Metz Lock can be configured to your security needs, and will even work with your password-protected Novell network. Metz Lock is shareware. Using Metz Lock beyond an evaluation period obliges you to register the program with the author. LFMEM.EXE LFMEM.EXE (Metz FreeMem) displays in a small moveable window the amont of system resources and memory currently available on your machine. It has several configurable options, such as always on top and location, and uses very little memory. Metz FreeMem is shareware. If you continue to use it past the recommended trial period, you must register the program with the author. LTIME.EXE LTIME.EXE (Metz Time) displays a digital clock in a small moveable window. Its configurable options are similar to those in Metz FreeMem, but include options specific to a clock, such as 12- or 24-hour mode. Again, this program uses very little memory and takes up little space on the desktop. All files in LTIME.EXE are shareware. If you continue to use them after a trial period, you must register the program with the author. LDKEY.EXE LDKEY.EXE (DefKey) is a program that allows you to define "hot keys" in order to call up Windows programs quickly, without having to point and click or dig through several windows of programs in order to activate it. DefKey is shareware, and you must register it with the author if you use it beyond the trial period. LDN.EXE LDN.EXE (Desktop Navigator) is a comprehensive and easily understood file and directory manager for Microsoft Windows. Desktop Navigator combines several important and time-saving features into one cohesive, menu-operated program. With Desktop Navigator you can quickly change drives, directories, or process files. Powerful features such as the ability to move an entire directory tree to another directory and/or drive are also included. Display options include a 12- or 24-hour onscreen clock, a memory display that details both DOS and Expanded EMS RAM, an edit field that allows you to specify the type of file to be displayed, a graphical directory tree, and a comprehensive file display. Desktop Navigator uses about 30K of memory. Desktop Navigator is shareware. If you use it beyond the trial period, you must register it with the author.
