Requirements: A C-Band Satelite system with a baseband out (they sometimes use other names but almost all units have this output) A SkyLink Demodulator A membership on SkyBoard Here's some information about SkyLink that I have picked up. To make a long story short, it's a cheap way to pick up files off your satelite dish without paying long distance. You need a special demodulator ($130US) from Home Shopping Club at 1-800-366-4010 and you need a membership on the SkyNet BBS ($50 but going up to $96/year real soon). You receive a text file once in a while that lists the type of files to expect each day (ie Saturday - Games, Sunday - Music, Monday - Education...). In addition you get a file list on occasion which gives the names and descriptions of the files you should expcect to see. SkyLink also sends out weather maps in PCX format and a number of Fidonet Echo areas in .QWK format. They are just getting into providing the TV listings for satelite dish owners but the service is still in beta testing. Good points: 1) Free Files - cool new thing to do with your dish! 2) Bad Points You have to have your dish tuned to Home Shopping Club (F4-15) to get the files. Not a big problem since the files repeat fairly often. You can just leave your dish on at night and get the files you need. The software REALLY lacks even the most basic features. For an example, you can NOT have your software reject files from a certain area. You couldn't, for example, instruct your software to skip all the weather maps or turn off the GAMES area, etc. You can't instruct your software to pick up JUST certain files and forget the rest. The concept is to make SkyLink a 2 way project. You would send a file request to SkyNet BBS and the files would turn up on your system in a few hours. This feature is not included in the software and doesn't seem to be in place yet. The next release of the software is due shortly so perhaps this will be fixed soon. In addition, they plan to release a new service aimed mainly at the BBS sysop. You may need to buy a different demodulator... time will tell. The service will be called SKYLINK/PLANET CONNECT. That's about all I know about it. So enough from me. Testing has begun on the transmission of SDN (Shareware Distribution Network) files through SKYLINK. We will be adding more services as they become availible to us. At this time we are working on some phone Ί Ί connections to allow live call-in shows which will be carried on this Ί Ί audio subcarrier. Ί Ί Ί Ί If you do not know how to adjust the audio subcarrier on your receiver Ί Ί or IRD, consult your owners manual for audio tuning or subcarrier Ί Ί tuning. Some of the manual tuning receivers have a knob on the front Ί Ί panel that tunes the audio. Many IRD's have a up and down button on Ί Ί the remote control for this purpose. Version 3.0 beta is now being tested in-house Ί Ί and will begin initial testing on the satellite in about 2 weeks. Ί Ί Several new conferences have been added to the Skymail system and the Ί Ί response has been excellent. One of the new conferences is the TVRO. Ί Ί This should be very interesting for many of you since it deals with Ί Ί home satellite information. Let us know which others you would like to Ί Ί see. We will be sending a list of all the different ones in a few Ί Ί days. We can start sending those as long as room permits. Ί Ί Ί Ί We have worked on pricing during the last few weeks and have been very Ί Ί careful about adding high expenses that could increase the Ί Ί subscription to unrealistic levels.
