If you have already upgraded to Word version 6.0, you can find this information on pages 12 through 14 of the "Getting Started and Printer Information"manual. If you do not own a previous version of Word for MS-DOS and want general information about the product, call Microsoft Consumer Sales at (800) 426-9400. Word 6.0 Now Resembles the Look and Feel of Our Other Word Products ------------------------------------------------------------------- We refined the Word 6.0 interface so it resembles that of other Word products such as Word for Windows(TM) or Word for the Macintosh(R). For example, the Utilities menu in Word version 5.5 has been replaced by the Tools menu in Word 6.0; the Macros menu has been removed, so you now select macro commands from the Tools menu; and the Help menu has been moved closer to the other command menus for easier access to online help. Bullets and Numbering --------------------- The new Bullets and Numbering features allow you to easily turn a series of paragraphs into a bulleted or numbered list. Just select the text and choose the Bullets Or Numbering command from the Tools menu. Word 6.0 does the rest. You can choose from several number formats for numbered lists and from a variety of predefined or special characters for bulleted lists. Use the Hanging Indent By option to have Word automatically indent the selected paragraphs. Insert Symbol ------------- The Insert Symbol feature allows you to insert special characters in a Word document that are unavailable on your keyboard, such as the trademark and copyright symbols. You can insert any symbol from the printable range of ASCII characters or, if your printer supports graphics, you can insert a character from any available Microsoft TrueType(R) font. This new command eliminates your having to know the ASCII character set number for each special character you want to insert. Tables ------ Word tables give you a quick way to arrange and adjust columns of text or numbers without using tabs or side-by-side paragraph formatting. You can use the table feature to create mailing labels, forms, or side- by-side paragraphs. If you have used Microsoft Excel, tables will be familiar. In fact, you can insert Microsoft Excel spreadsheet data in your Word document as a table. You can either create a new table or you can convert existing text to a Word table. Help for WordPerfect(R) Users ----------------------------- The built-in WordPerfect Help feature makes it easy for you to learn Word if you already know WordPerfect. Password Protection ------------------- Many of you requested a password-protection feature, so we added it to Word 6.0. You can now add password protection to any Word document, preventing others from viewing or making changes to that document. Print Preview Zoom ------------------ Sometimes it's hard to see text and graphics in print preview. Using the Zoom command, you can magnify part of a page for easier viewing. Print Merge Helper ------------------ The new Print Merge Helper provides an easy-to-use series of dialog boxes and a toolbar to guide you through Word's powerful print merge feature. Print Merge Helper will assist you every step of the way - from creating data files and main documents to printing. TrueType Fonts -------------- Word 6.0 incorporates Microsoft TrueType outline font technology, which gives you high-quality printed fonts if your printer can print graphics, even if your printer contains only one or two built-in fonts. Drag-and-Drop Text Editing -------------------------- Using the mouse, you can drag selected text to copy or move it to a new location. You don't have to choose a command from a menu or press any quick keys when you use the drag-and-drop feature. Ribbon Changes -------------- Word 6.0 adds the following features to the ribbon: - The Styles box now includes remarks so you can easily identify which styles you want to apply. - The new Table button displays a grid that you drag with the mouse to specify how many table rows and columns you want to insert. - The new Indent and Unindent buttons apply and remove left margin indents with a single mouse click. - The ribbon now includes two mouse "hot spots" that you can click to open frequently used dialog boxes. You can double-click Font to bring up the Format Character dialog box, and you can double-click Style to bring up the Format Apply Style dialog box to check style definitions or to apply character and section styles. Check Spelling in Another Language ---------------------------------- Using the Format Language command, you can format text in different languages. When you check the spelling of a document that contains text in several different languages, Word uses the appropriate dictionary for each language. Footnote Placement ------------------ In Word 6.0, you can place footnotes either at the end of a page, at the end of a section, or at the end of the document.
