HURICANE CHECK-LIST FOR PET OWNERS PLAN AHEAD...IN THE EVENT YOU MUST EVACUATE: 1. Make early arrangements for your pets, long before a natural disaster happens, so that they will be cared for properly. 2. Be sure that rabies vaccinations are up to date, per city ordinance. 3. Be sure that your pets have current city license tags. The tag(s) shall be attached to a well fitting collar around dog or cat's neck, per city ordinance. 4. Select a shelter for your pet in the event you must evacuate: a. Boarding kennel (in high, dry location) b. Veterinary clinic (for sick or medicated animals) c. Dependable friends or relatives, out of the area d. Motels; check early to see which ones allow pets. e. City of Casselberry Animal Control Shelter* 5. Large animals, like horses, should be transported out of flood-prone areas, and sheltered or temporarily re-located. 6. Small exotic animals, like rodents or reptiles, which are normally kept in small cages or plastic receptacles including fish tanks, will not be allowed at most shelters, so check with friends or relatives, or secure them well inside the house including ample food, water, and a high location in case of flood. 7. Domestic animals like dogs, cats, and caged birds will be welcomed for sheltering by Animal Control authorities. 8. Tropical fish must be cared for also. It is unlawful to dispose of them in any river, pond, lake or other fresh or salt body of water, per Florida State Statute 372.26. Battery-operated filtration systems are available for purchase to aerate fish aquariums/tanks. This should be considered ahead of time in case of power outages that last any significant length of time. 9. IF POSSIBLE, buy individual pet carriers or crates for your pets, for easy transport and comfort during their stay in shelter. 10. Make sure you have properly fitted collar(s) and leash(es). 11. Identification Tags should be securely attached to collar(s), including CURRENT vaccination and license tags. IF YOU CAN STAY AT HOME ... REMEMBER YOUR PETS!!! Dogs and cats should be brought indoors, even if they are usually "outdoor" pets. Very heavy rain, wind, lightning and hail could injure or kill your pet. Remember your pet has feelings too and will be very scared if left outside. Never leave your pet on a Dog run in any storm. It can act as a lightning conductor and kill your pet. Rabbits or other small animals in outdoor hutches or cages should be brought inside to safety. Put them in a high, dry location indoors and away from windows since they may break. A garage may be ideal. Unenclosed carports are not secure areas. Stock up on pet needs ahead of time: 1. Buy ample pet foods and store them. 2. Potable water storage (gallon jugs). 3. Kitty litter, bird gravel paper, cedar shavings, etc. 4. Newspaper. 5. Plastic trash bags for pet waste. 6. Cleaners, disinfectants 7. Medications - current or anticipated illness or nervousness. Other helpful hints: 1. Talk soothingly to your pet during the disaster. 2. Use caution after the storm in allowing your pet outdoors. Downed power lines and reptiles (snakes, gators...) forced inland by flood waters can present dangers to your pet. Familiar scents and landmarks may be altered or lost. A current city license tag is your pet's ticket home. *************************************************************************** The Following information is specific to Casselberry residents.
