by turning off ARA's AutoAnswer.  In the long term, you'll need to get an 
updated version of FAXstf (available summer  '93).  Silent Answer supported 
with V1.7x ROMs (add +FAA=3 or +FAE=3 to modem init string).  Versions earlier 
than 2.2 don't work correctly.
