Raphel, a career foreign service officer and one of the State Department's leading experts on South Asian Affairs, to be his personal representative at the funeral of slain Sri Lankan President Ranasinghe Premadasa. In an earlier statement, the President expressed his outrage at the brutal act of terrorism that led to the death of President Premadasa. President Clinton applauded President Premadasa's efforts to promote his country's development and raise the standard of living of all Sri Lankans. The funeral is scheduled for Thursday, May 6 in Colombo. Earlier today the White House announced the President's intention to nominate Ms. Raphel as Assistant Secretary of State for South Asian Affairs. -30-
