Also included are books by, and about, local people. To complement this local collection there is also a wide range of general works on Scotland, including the 1st 2nd and 3rd Statistical Accounts, the Reports of the Royal Commission on Ancient and Historic Monuments; and publications of bodies such as the Society of antiquaries of Scotland. A growing collection of 19th Century local directories is available and these can often be of considerable value to local and family historians. MAPS ~~~~ Ordnance Survey maps of the area are stocked at a variety of scales and from various periods. Some older maps and estate and other plans are also held. NEWSPAPERS ~~~~~~~~~~ DALKEITH ADVERTISER o This is available in microfilm or hard copy from 1869 to the present day. SOUTH MIDLOTHIAN ADVERTISER o A run of this paper is held for the period 1932-52 and 1960-73 (and for its predecessor the 'Midlothian Journal' from 1884-1932). This deals in more detail with the western area of the District. COMMUNITY NEWSPAPERS o We maintain files of such local publications as the Penicuik Town Crier and the Mayfield and Easthouses Reporter. SCOTSMAN o Available on microfilm from 1987 onwards. PAMPHLETS AND SUBJECT FILES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ A substantial collection of press cuttings, programmes, pamphlets, photocopies of articles and research notes is maintained. PRINTS AND PHOTOGRAPHS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ An extensive collection of photographs, engravings, etc., depicting buildings, places, and events in the District is available. Donations, or loans of material for copying, to extend this collection would be welcomed. VALUATION ROLLS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We hold an almost complete set of Rolls for the County of Midlothian from 1867-1975 and for the District from 1975 to date. These show the owner and usually, tenant of each property at the time of compilation. Until 1958 they also stated the tenant's occupation. CENSUS RETURNS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The 1841-91 Census returns are available on microfilm for the area covered by Midlothian at that time. These show entire families with ages and occupations. From 1851 the return also shows parish of birth. GENEALOGICAL SOURCES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The 1991 and International Genealogical Indexes are available on microfiche. These lists entries for baptisms and marriages appearing in the Old Parish Registers and in some Civil Registers up to 1855 and in some cases into the 1870's. Microfilm of the Old Parish Registers for parishes still in Midlothian is also held and includes birth, marriage and burial registers. Some lists of monumental inscriptions are available. ARCHIVES ~~~~~~~~ A varied collection of archive material from both official and private sources is available. Among the most generally useful groups are: LOCAL AUTHORITY ARCHIVES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o The records of the former Burghs of Bonnyrigg & Lasswade, Dalkeith, Loanhead and Penicuik are held as are minutes etc. of the former District Councils of Gala Water, Lasswade, Newbattle and Penicuik. A limited amount of material relating to courts, local bequests, welfare and public health is also available. MIDLOTHIAN COUNTY COUNCIL ARCHIVES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o Most County Council records are currently held by the Scottish Record Office and a handlist of this material is available. SCHOOL LOG BOOKS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o Covering most Midlothian schools from the late 19th to mid 20th Century. SCHOOL BOARD & EDUCATION COMMITTEE RECORDS ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o Including the financial records and correspondence of local School Boards in the period 1870-1919. PRIVATE ARCHIVES ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ o These include family papers such as those of the Lucas family of Dalkeith as well as records of local organisations and institutions. o Enquiries regarding the archive collection should be made to the archivist. Inventories of the whole collection are available. o We would welcome the gift or deposit of further archive material from families, companies. and societies. USING THE COLLECTION ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The material described above is housed in the Local Studies Collection within the District Libraries Headquarters at Loanhead and is freely available for reference use on the premises. A limited stock of duplicate copies of printed books is available for loan. Microfilm and microfiche readers and reader are are available. These enable researchers to obtain photocopies from microform sources. Normal photocopying facilities are also available. A visit to the collection with a talk on its resources can be arranged for schools, local history societies or other groups. Such visits can be held outwith normal opening hours. The District Library Service has an active programme of reprinting local books and maps. These are on sale at Loanhead and at all libraries. A current list of publications is available. Penicuik Library houses the important Will Black Collection of material on Penicuik and district as well as an extensive press cuttings collection on the locality created and maintained by the Penicuik Local History Society.
