Housed in the National Library's new 'high tech' Causewayside Building in Edinburgh, the Scottish Science Library is a reference library offering a comprehensive service in its subject areas. There is no charge for admission, or to consult material in the Library, but prospective users should bring identification with them. WHO CAN USE THE LIBRARY ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Library is open to any person or institution with a need to use its collections. Certain restrictions apply to undergraduate students and schoolchildren. Details available on request. The business community can call upon the expertise of the specialist staff of the Scottish Business Information Service, which is based in the Scottish Science Library. o Extensive collections All new scientific books and journals published in the UK are received under legal deposit legislation, and these are backed up by an extensive collection of foreign periodicals. o Browsing facility Current books, journals, and reference works are on open access, leaving readers free to browse among the shelves. o Indexing and abstracting sources All major sources are held, including Biological Abstracts 1926- Chemical Abstracts 1907- Science Abstracts 1898- Science Citation Index 1945- o The latest technology Online access to a wide range of databases, together with the latest CD-ROM facilities, supplement conventional sources of information. o Personal attention Specialist staff are on hand to deal with all types of enquiry, from the simple to the complex. Desk research is undertaken on request. o Remote access For the convenience of those who cannot visit the Library, enquiries are accepted by telephone, fax, and telex. There is a special direct line to the Business Information help desk. o Interlibrary loan and document supply If the Library is unable to supply a book or journal from its own stock, the reader may use the inter-library loan facility. This service provides either a photocopy of the document, or the book/journal itself, for study within the Library. o Self-service photocopying Self-service photocopying is available, in addition to standard photocopy and photographic services.
