The Centre houses a nearly comprehensive collection of books, journal articles, old photographs, maps and plans and ephemera on people, places and events in East Lothian. In addition there are important PRIMARY SOURCES of great value in local history and family history research They include the following : * CENSUS ENUMERATION BOOKS (held on microfilm). Years covered: 1841, 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891. Contents: a record of each household, its address, its members, their ages, occupations and parish of birth. * VALUATION ROLLS (held on microfiche). Years covered: 1899 - present. Contents: a record of each household, its address, use made of premises, proprietor, tenant, tenant's occupation, valuation. * PARISH REGISTERS OF BIRTHS, MARRIAGES AND DEATHS (held on microfilm). Years covered: Approx 1650 - 1854. Contents: a record of births, marriages and deaths, with occupation of parents and witnesses often given. Earlier registers often include sections of kirk session minutes and accounts and rolls of the poor. For seventeenth century records, some prior study of handwriting will be necessary. Selective index of christenings and marriages, giving date, names and parishes for each. All the counties of Scotland are included, each listed separately by surname. * MORMON INDEX TO OLD PARISH REGISTERS (held on microfiche). Index of christenings and marriages in the county of Berwick, East Lothian and Midlothian, each listed separately by surname, and giving date, names and parish for each transaction recorded. * REGISTER OF SASINES (PROPERTY TRANSACTIONS). Since 1660 all heritable property (i.e. land) changing hands in Scotland has been registered in the Register of Sasines. The local centre holds the following: (1) Person index to all transactions between 1559 - 1660. (2) Sasine abridgements 1781 - 1947 (plus card index by person 1781 - 1868), card index by place 1781 - 1868 in process of compilation; annual indices by person and place from 1869) Contents: Entries since 1858 - synopsis of deed of conveyance (title deed); before 1858 - synopsis of the sasine (the official ceremony of taking possession of the land). * EAST LOTHIAN ANNUAL REGISTERS AND YEARBOOKS. Years covered: 1820 - 1970 (with gaps). These are not trade directories, but almanacs containing a wealth of miscellaneous information such as local officials (schoolmasters, etc.); voters, landed gentry, farmers, carriers, local societies, post offices. * EAST LOTHIAN COURIER (held on microfilm). Years covered: 1859 - present. Contents: births, marriages and deaths, shop adverts, sport, local politics and industry, schools, social life. * EAST LOTHIAN NEWS (held on microfilm). Printed volumes covering years 1963 - 1983 are held in the Library Headquarters, Lodge Street, Haddington. Microfilm copies covering 1984 to the present day are available at the Local History Centre. * MUSSELBURGH NEWS (held on microfilm). Years covered: 1889 - 1941. Printed copies covering 1942 to the present day are held at Library Headquarters. * PHOTOGRAPHS. We have a growing collection of prints, negatives and transparencies, arranged according to parish and covering the years from the late 19th century onwards. * MISCELLANEOUS. Most general topics are covered on a county basis, but also on a more specific level, such as parish, town or village. Material includes statistical accounts (one for each parish in the 1790's, 1830's and 1950's); town guides and tourist guides from the mid-nineteenth century; newspaper scrapbooks; county development plans (post World War II); census data. * NOTE: Booking microfilm - microfiche reader.
