Home Decor: Fabric'd Window Box

Supplies needed to complete this project:

Walnut Hollow:
 # 21204 Small Window Box
 Flair Finish (7965 2 oz.) or other waterbase varnish
Brushes:
 1" foam brush
Fabric & Fusible Web:
 18" x 7" V.I.P iabric, or fabric of your choice
 lS" x 7" fusible web (iron-on)
Miscellaneous Supplies:
 Wood filler
 Putty knife
 #400 sand paper
 Tack cloth
 Paper towel

Step 1: Prepare wood:

  - Use a Dutty knife to apply wood filler in nail holes.

  - Immediately scrape excess off surface with putty knife.

 Step 2: Sand with a #400 sandpaper when dry.

   - Sand all excess wood putty and rough edges of wood.

   - Remove wood dust by wiping thoroughly with tack cloth

Step 3: Paint primer coat

  - Use ~ 1" foaam brush and apply 1 coat of paint. Squeeze
  a small arnount of paint on a palette (a plastic lid or piece
  of waxed paper will work for this). Dip the brush into the
  paint and to "load" it (do not load brush heavily, to avoid
  drips and runs). Brush paint on evenly, in one direction.
  Let dry.

     Pink:  ends and inside of window box, plus rounded
            edge and grooves on sides
     Black: arched edges of ends.

Step 4: Sand

- Notice how the paint has raised the grain of the wood.
  To make the the wood smooth again, sand lightly with fine
  sandpaper in one direction, until the surface feels smooth
  to your fingertips. Remove dust with the tack cloth.

  An alternative method is to buff with a folded piece torn
  piece of brown paper hag. Rub over surface as you would
  with sandpaper. This techniyue does not remove as much
  paint OR create as much dust as does sandpaper.

Step 5: Paint second coat

   - Using the same colors as the prirner coat, apply a second
   coat of paint using the 1" foam brush. Brush paint on
   evenly, in one direction. Let dry.

Step 6: "Dry brush"gold accent trim

  - Dip a dry 1" foam brush in the gold paint and wipe
    almost all off on paper towel.

  - Gently brush on arched edges that have been painted
    black, and rounded edge of sides painted pink. Don't
    apply any pressure when brushiing. Reload brush often.

Step 1: Varnish with Flair Finish:

   - Use a 1" foam brush to apply a coat of waterbase varnisE
     to the painted surfaces of the window box. As with paint,
     you should not overload the brush and keep your strokes
     even. Varnish should not drip or run when applied
     properly. Let dry. Apply a second coat of varnish in same
     manner as first, if desired.

Step 8: Fabric Application

   - Cut two pieces of fabric and two of fusible web 3-1/2 x
     16 1/4", keeping edges very straight and angles square.
     Following directions supplied with fusible web, iron one
     piece of web to wrong side of each piece of fabric.

   - Remove the paper backing from the fusible web and
     iron the fabric pieces onto the sides, placing one long
     edge into the groove, and smoothing the fabric around the
     curve and down the side of the window box.

   - Trim excess fabric close to wood edges with a sharp
     scissors.
