SB DX @ ALLBBS $OPDX.157 Ohio/Penn DX Bulletin No. 157 The Ohio/Penn Dx PacketCluster DX Bulletin No. 157 BID: $OPDX.157 May 9, 1994 Editor Tedd Mirgliotta, KB8NW Provided by BARF-80 BBS Cleveland, Ohio Online at 216-237-8208 14400/9600/2400/1200/300 8/N/1 Thanks to the Northern Ohio Amateur Radio Society, Northern Ohio DX Association, Ohio/Penn PacketCluster Network, DL7VEE & DXNL, DF4RD, K4CEF & Southeastern Cluster Group, WB3JFS, WK3N, K3ZR, W5HVV, WI5A, KF7E and WD8NSD for the following DX information. 7O, YEMEN. It has been a little over a week since Robert, N4GCK (one of the operators of the 3Y0PI), announced the good news that he has received permission to operate as 7O0CW and he could be active during July. Now for the bad news! The newspapers report, "Yemen has edged toward civil war in a fight over the two regions since conservative North Yemen and socialist South Yemen united on May 22, 1990". Fierce fighting is reported between the northern and southern troops on the border region between Yemen's two feuding regions. A5, BHUTAN. Roderick, W5HVV, spoke with Jim Smith, VK9NS, on the air May 4th and Jim stated that he had spoken with the Ministry of Communication of Bhutan. Jim mentioned that he was anticipating a trip to Bhutan to operate. All the equipment and a beam are already there. Jim is only awaiting the final word from the Ministry of Communication and he would be off and running. There was an indication that Jim would also operate from Bangladesh (S2) and Nepal (9N), probably on his way to Bhutan. A6, UNITED ARAB EMIRATES. It has been reported that A61AN is a SLIM operating in Dubai. If you ask this station about QSL info, he will tell you, "FORGET IT! I did not QSL at all!". At Dayton, Don (WB2DND/A61AD) has also stated this station is operating illegeally and was claiming to be Nasir the "old" A61AF operator. Don also mentioned he will be return to U.A.E. in October. BY, CHINA. George, BY/KA3NRG, is now in Beijing on business during the month of May. George's free time is limited, but his plans are to operate the ususal SSB DX frequencies. He is a relatively new DXer, but he is savvy and says he will not hesitate to QSY or pull the plug should the gang become unruly. QSL via K3WS. KH0, MARIANA ISLANDS. From May 26-30th, JA6VZB and JF6BCC will be active as AH0T and KH2GR/KH0, respectively. Operations will be on 160-10 meters, CW/SSB and RTTY; and they will participate in the WPX contest. VR6, PITCAIRN ISLAND. According to Dave, VR6ME, as of April, VR stations are allowed to use 12 and 17 meters. He states operations prior to this were not quite legit. Also, he stated the new call sign for the Pitcairn Amateur Radio Club is now VR6PAC. DX-TIDBITS..... Jim, 5X1B, will be (or is) QRT in May, but heads for Cameroon (TJ) after a home leave...... Because of budget cutbacks in Moscow, the Vostok Antarctic outpost (4K1C) has been recently abandoned. The Vostok base holds the record for the coldest spot on earth. 129 below zero, achieved on July 21, 1983...... Mike, ZD8M (G3UOF), has gone QRT from Ascention Island as March 16, 1994. A report of using his (G3UOF) home address, instead of the Ascention Island address, results in a quicker turn around of his QSL cards..... NOT ACCEPTED BY THE DXCC DESK. Bill, K5FUV, at the Dayton HamVention DX Forum, entertained a few question about a few operations and has stated the following: The I2RAO/HK0 (Malpelo) cards were not being accepted because the operator apparently just showed up at the island and asked the persons that were there for permission to land. I2RAO did not receive the permission from the right govenrment agency and that it was unlikely that permission would ever be granted. The cards would probably never be accepted. The FR/DJ6SI/G (Glorioso) cards would not be accepted because Baldur did not have the proper permission to be there. DAYTON HAMVENTION SUMMARY (From a DXer's point a view! by KB8NW). Another Dayton HamVention has come and gone, and there are good and bad things to remember about this convention (naturally the good out weigh the bad). The only major complaint is that "Mother-Nature" was not too kind to the conventioneers. I do beleive that this is four years in a row of bad and rainy weather. Many of us wait all year for this special event to happen. Hey! Does anyone have "Mother-Nature's" InterNet address? (Doesn't InterNet go anywhere?) Maybe we can send her a message and ask her to "P L E A S E" "Give......Us.....A......Break......Next.....Year!". At least she can not disrupt the DX Forum, DX Dinner Banquet and the visiting of the hospitally suites. I look forward every year to meet with old and new friends at these special activities. For me, this is the highlight of the HamVention. If you are a DXer and have never attended at least one of these functions, you are missing out on the whole purpose of this "CONVENTION". Those that attended the Southwest Ohio DX Association's Dinner Banquet were treated to a great slide presentation on the 3Y0PI DXpedition by Ralph Fedor, K0IR. After the banquet, members of the 3Y0PI DXpedition were on hand in one of the hospitality suites, to meet and greet all; plus to autograph an excellent book on the 3Y0PI DXpedition written by Bob Schmieder, KK6EK. At the DX Forum there were presentations by Bill Kennamer, K5FUV (DXCC Administrator) and Bob Beatty, W4VQ (DXAC Chairman). Bill give an update on status of the DXCC Desk in the processings of the applications, changes and the growth of DXing. Bob's talk dealt with the DX Advisory Committee past and present activities. Other presentations included: Richard Grantham's (VE1AI) DXpedition to C51A, Igor Zdorov's (KU0J) DXpedition 1B/KU0J and Holger Hannenmann's (DL7VTM) 1992 Pacific DXpedition. It was great to see and meet again, NODXA member Holger and his girlfriend Birgit (DG9WYL). Holger introduced me to his QSL Manager, Fritz (DL7VRO), and his daughter Silke. Plans were worked out later to have both Fritz and Silke attended the NODXA meeting the Monday after the Hamvention. But the highlight of the DX Forum was another presentation on the 3Y0PI DXpedition by Terry Dubson, W6MKB. This presentation was totally different from the one that Ralph, K0IR, presented. Different slides and a rough cut video were shown. After the presentation, the 3Y team were applauded and received a standing ovation. In summary, Dayton was not a total loss. As long as there can be an international gathering of friends and a show of goodwill, I will keep returning to the Dayton HamVention. FAX YOUR DX INFORMATION NOW!
