And now the solar factual data: The period from the 16th to the 22nd of May has seen solar activity remain at very low levels; no flares were reported and no M or X flares have been reported since last February. Sunspot indices have remained low and meaned at about 45. With the more active side of the sun coming into view, solar flux levels started to climb and reached 95 units by the 17th, the highest levels since March 5th, but declined slightly by the 22nd giving an average for the period of 90 units. The 90 day flux mean was 86 units on the 22nd. The geomagnetic Ap indices declined from sub storm levels of 34 units on the 16th, down to quiet levels of 7 units by the 21st. Coronal holes are still troublesome but their intensity seems to be dying down. The electron Fluence levels are still very high due to the outbursts from the coronal holes, and stable ionospheric conditions will not return until these levels fall to nearer normal. The state has been 'Nil nothing to report' all the period. The aa indices as supplied by the British Geological Survey for the period 10th to 16th May was generally quiet, with the daily index for the week averaging 38.8 nanoTeslas about K3; the 13th was very quiet being only 11.7 nanoTeslas. The X-Ray flux levels have recovered and averaged A6.8 units; this was undoubtedly responsible for the increased solar flux levels. The monthly Ap indices for April was 26 units and the smoothed level for October 93 was 15.6 units. I'll repeat the figures. Spots - 45; Flux - 90; Ap index - 13.4; X-ray flux - A6.8 April Ap 26 units. Now the ionospheric data for Central France: The F2 day-time critical frequencies at Poitiers as reported by Meudon are now being affected by the seasonal changes, so the daily highs are continuing to decline and averaged 7.0MHz. These levels are being reached around 19.00 hours. The darkness hour lows increase with the seasonal changes and averaged 3.6MHz, though there have been periods of spread F and Blanketing sporadic E. The lows are now centred about 04.00 hours. I'll repeat the figures. Highs - 7.0MHz; lows - 3.6MHz. Now the ionospheric data for the north: The F2 day-time critical frequencies at Ekaterinberg averaged 5.6MHz and the darkness hour lows 3.1MHz I'll repeat the figures: Highs - 5.6MHz; lows - 3.1MHz. And lastly the solar forecast: This week the more active side of the sun will be rotating away; solar flux levels are expected to be about the 75s, with the geomagnetic levels up to sub storm about an Ap of 35 units, declining slightly as the week goes by. F-layer day-time ionospheric MUFs in the south are expected to be about 21MHz, though sporadic E could give openings at times up to the 50MHz band. The darkness hours are expected to reach 14MHz. The northern stations could be affected by the expected high geomagnetic activity so levels could be well down for them. North/south paths will be generally the best. And that's the end of the solar information.
