Once we have completed shipping the backlog of winter orders, we ship orders within two weeks of receiving them. Cox 1440-1441 Everett Road Eagle River, WI 54521 (715)749-3099 Dear African violet friends, As we begin our ninth season of shipping "superior violets grown expressly for you", we look forward to providing you with plants and leaves that you have selected from the over 600 excellent varieties described on the following pages of this catalog. My sincere thanks to all our many customers' calls and wonderful letters, through the years, have expressed pleasure with the plants and leaves received from The Violet Express. It is most gratifying to learn that increasing numbers of award winning show plants were "born" here! Your kind words mean so much to all of us as your satisfaction is our first priority! In 1986, when my "little hobby" became a business, I shipped 42 orders, Last season that number surpassed 1000 orders of plants and leaves. I will forever be in awe of the rate at which the number of our mail order customers has grown each year! The number of shop customers has increased in equal proportions each season as well. Tourism is the #1 'industry' in this area and the Violet Express has become one of the major attraction to be visited by those who vacation in these beautiful Northwoods. The business that began as "mine" has grown to "ours" as I have three full- time, knowledgeable assistants to keep ME in line as well as seeing to the well-being of the 'babies', stock plants, and shipping of your orders. What began with two stands on a porch has expanded to a growing area of over 2500 square feet in my almost 'new' home's basement..ahem! "lower level"..designed specifically for the plants. There are now 47 three tier and 14 four tier light carts (for leaves and babies) that provide the space for nurturing our stock plants and the 14,000 to 16000 babies grown each year. For those of you who are not familiar with The Violet Express, I invite you to experience the pleasure of receiving and growing my strong, healthy (and happy) plants and leaves. We send good sized, well established starter plants in wicked 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" pots. Leaves are fresh cut just prior to shipping. Every plant and leaf is expertly wrapped and packed in well insulated boxes. Lots of TLC is given each individual order to insure its safe arrival to its new home. We have received innumerable compliments on not only our plants and leaves, but on the quality of our shipping methods as well. Shipping begins about May 1, weather permitting, and continues through October or until cold temperature make it unsafe. As orders begin arriving early in January, some delay may be expected at the beginning of the shipping season as orders are processed in the rotation in which they are received. Your canceled check is acknowledgement of your order. Your canceled check is acknowledgement of your order. We ship only on Mondays and Tuesdays to areas beyond a two day delivery of Eagle River, so that your plants and/or leaves will arrive before the weekend. We specialize in overseas shipping and have successfully sent our plants and leaves as far away as Australia and South Africa. We are proud that these orders arrived at their destinations in excellent condition. If visiting or passing through this lovely area, do stop in to say hello and see the gorgeous display of thousands of violets in all stages of growth and bloom. The ship is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 to 4. We are closed on Sundays and Mondays as those are the days your mail orders are wrapped and packed. We look forward to having you to join us in the colorful, fascinating journey into the world of African violets from The Violet Express. May each of you find delight in growing our favorite houseplants and in the friendships made through the bonds of the beautiful African Violets. Please ask about Club Project Plants and Club Orders. If leaves are ordered of these varieties substitutions will be of our choice unless you have listed an acceptable variety on your sub list. SUBSTITUTIONS: Please list several subs. Substitutions will no be made unless absolutely necessary, but on occasion, this may be the case. A sub list also helps us select gift plants and/or leaves of varieties that you would like to have. Please fill in your phone number on the order blank in case we need to contact you about your order. Also, please give any special instructions regarding shipping carrier, vacation dates, etc. ORDERS FOR FALL SHIPPING MUST BE RECEIVED BY OCTOBER 1st. Orders received after October 1st will be held over for shipping in the spring of 1995. Temperatures in northern Wisconsin, especially at night, often become too cold by mid-to-late October, making late fall shipping hazardous. We continue to ship as long as possible, weather permitting. All leaves we use for propagation are taken from plants that have bloomed true to description. We have no control over the sometimes variable nature of fantasy, edged blooms, or the yellow varieties. We do not guarantee the blossom performance of these plants under your individual growing conditions. All leaves for orders are taken only from stock plants that have bloomed true through several blooming cycles. SHIPPING INFORMATION Shipments will be made in the order in which they are received. Your order will be shipped via UPS unless otherwise requested. We must have a street address, or R.R. and box number. UPS DOES NOT deliver to Post Office Box numbers. Rural Rout customers: Please supply your fire number and road name if possible. We ship via Priority Mail by request. Shipping charges for Priority Mail are the same as for UPS 2ed day air. Surface UPS is satisfactory for all of Wisconsin, Minnesota, western Michigan, and the upper 1/3 of Illinois (the metropolitan Chicago area). For shipment to all areas beyond this, we strongly recommend UPS 2ed day air service. It is well worth the extra money for this faster service as your order will arrive in far fresher condition. PLEASE NOTE: ALL ORDERS TO CALIFORNIA AND ARIZONA WILL BE SENT ONLY BY UPS 2ND DAY AIR OR PRIORITY MAIL out to these States' mandatory agricultural inspection that can slightly delay delivery of your order. ALL SHIPMENTS TO ALASKA AND HAWAII ARE MADE VIA UPS 2ND DAY AIR. INCLUDE $20.00 FOR THIS SERVICE, INSTEAD OF THE REGULAR $10.50 2ND DAY AIR CHARGE. Any overpayment will be refunded. If actual UPS costs are over this amount, you will be billed for the balance. WE CANNOT GUARANTEE SAFE ARRIVAL OF ORDERS SHIPPED BY REGULAR (SURFACE) UPS BEYOND A 2 DAY DELIVERY AREA OF EAGLE RIVER WISCONSIN. We prefer not to ship during very hot weather. The boxes are well insulated, but damage can occur if shipped when temperatures are very high. Please be patient if temperatures between here and your home are above 90 degrees. For the safety of the plants and/or leaves, we may delay shipments during this time. If you experience a problem with the condition of your order upon arrival, contact us immediately. If the box arrives in damaged condition contact UPS (or the alternate carrier) at once, then contact us. As violet leaves are brittle, an occasional broken leaf may be expected, but if the plants are SEVERELY damaged upon arrival (a very rare occurrence), call us and return the damaged plants to us immediately. We must receive them within seven days of our shipping date to you. We will determine the reason for and extent of the damage and, if we are at fault, we will gladly replace the damaged varieties. The customer must assume the full shipping costs for any returns to us and for the replacements. Our plants are good sized with established root systems. All leaves are fresh cut just prior to shipping. If a few of the varieties you have ordered are not large enough to send, we may wait a short while before shipping to give the smaller plants time to reach a larger, sturdier shipping size. We sincerely regret that due to increases in rates by UPS and for our shipping materials, we are forced to pass a portion of these increases on to you, our customers. These nominal increases only HELP to cover our increased costs. SHIPPING CHARGES: Basic packing and shipping fee: $ 6.50 or UPS 2ed day air $10.50 for each plant over 4 ADD $ .50 for each leaf over 12 ADD $ .10 Sales Tax: Wisconsin Residents, add 5 1/2% sales tax to the total of plants AND shipping charges. FOREIGN ORDERS: The Violet Express specializes in the shipping of foreign orders. Payments must accompany orders and be made by check, bank draft, or money order in U.S. funds. Any special agricultural permits, labels, etc, that are necessary MUST be sent with your order. Any specific information, such as the safest time to ship to your area, weather and temperature-wise, is appreciated. It is essential that you indicate HOW the plants are to be prepared for shipping...ex: with the root ball entirely removed; with roots removed from the main stem; potted in a soilless medium; limitations of pot sizes, etc. IF THE PLANT MUST BE WASHED FREE OF OUR SOILLESS MIX, ADD $.75 PER PLANT FOR THIS ADDITIONAL PREPARATION. SHIPPING FEES: ADD TO THE COST OF YOUR PLANTS AND/OR LEAVES: Necessary Wisconsin Agricultural Phytosanitary Certificate $17.00 Packing and Handling charge $10.00 Plus 40% of cost for plants and leaves to apply toward shipping. If the actual cost of postage is more than applied, I will bill you; if less, your account will be credited. All orders shipped beyond U.S. borders are sent via U.S. Postal International Air Express. It is expensive, but the transit time is shorter, thus you order arrives in much fresher condition. All boxes are completely lined with insulation. Plants and leaves are wrapped and packed with utmost care to help secure their safe arrival. Although live materials such as plants cannot be insured, we plainly specify that the boxes are to be shipped in pressurized compartments to avoid damage from cold at high altitudes. We do not send small plants that would possibly not survive the trip so we will, at times, delay the shipment a short time until all of the plants are of a sturdy size for sending a great distance. We have successfully sent our plants and leaves to Japan, Hong Kong, the Phillipines,Australia, South Africa, England, Sweden, and several other European countries, as well as to Bermuda, the Caribbean, and Canada. Our customers from overseas have complimented us on the size and quality of the plants and leaves and the excellent condition in which they have arrived. Actually, all I have at this time is a current computer listing of all my miniatures, semi-miniatures, and trailers. I've intended to put out a good descriptive listing, but since I don't do a great deal of advertising, etc. I've never gotten to it! However, with so many people expressing an interest, I promise to get to work on it SOON! As yet, I haven't gotten my standards listed on to the computer. Although I do grow and show standards, I don't "collect" them as I do the mini's, and only maintain a limited number of my favorites. In addition to many of the "classics: I do have approximately 400 standard plants including new varieties from Lyon Greenhouse, Granger Gardens, Fredette, Marie Burns, Ethel Champion, various Canadian hybridizers, and more. By next year they will be listed!! Meanwhile, I will try to fill all requests, but a present can only promise a "similar" type or another plant from the same hybridizer. Of course, "gift" leaves are always included. Charges are $1.00 for leaves, and $3.75 for postage. I always try to put in a pair, especially if they are small, but in rare instances it may be necessary to send a single leaf. Larger standards are generally one leaf. Shipping is on Mondays, via Priority Mail, weather permitting. If you have any questions at all, please let me know. Hope to hear from you soon. Jack and Claire Pardo -------------------------------------------------------- LES VIOLETTES NATALIA 124 ch. Grapes, Sawyerville, Quebec Canada JOB 3A0 or P.O. Box 206, Beecher Falls, Vermont 05902-0206 USA (819)889-3235 LES VIOLETTES NATAILIA would like to thank all our valued customers for making 1993 a successful year. 1993 was also our media year, with a lovely article in HOUSEPLANT MAGAZINE, and excellent full colour magazine catering just to the indoor growing hobby, and the local Montreal Television News. Our business has again grown which means an even larger work load, however we are still here to serve you and your gardening needs. We carry one of North America's largest selection of both African Violets and Gesneriads, so why not come and see a spectacular array of colorful blooms while visiting our greenhouse situated in a marvelous country setting with a wonderful view. Sorry, no cuttings sold at the Greenhouse just plants and indoor Gardening supplies only. There is no problem taking houseplants across the border as long as you specify that they are "houseplants". The Greenhouse is located just 30 miles north of the Vermont, New Hampshire borders. Greenhouse hours are Tuesday through Sunday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., twelve months a year. We hope you will visit our growing plant family soon! Again we have many new additions in our catalogue, so take your time and read carefully the Ordering Shipping Information page before placing your order and please use our order forms as a new one will be sent with your order. If you purchase by catalogue from us, the following year you will automatically receive a new catalogue. We have included some cultural tips for the newcomers to Gesneriad growing, we want everyone to be successful at growing their Gesneriads and Violets. If you have any questions about a particular plant, please call and we will do our best to help you fine the right answer. Please respect our telephone business hours which are 8:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., no calls after 5:30 p.m. Mail-order is a great way to obtain rare plants not seen at your average Garden Center and we do our best to offer top choice, rare and unusual plants that may be hard to find. This year you will find a new section of houseplants including many fragrant flowering plants and who can resist fragrant flowering plants?! Service is a priority, getting the plants to you in perfect condition which requires rapid transit is our formost concern EXPRESS MAIL for our international customers gets your plants to your customs in one to two days. Unfortunately Canada Post's first class service is not always rapid, so we strongly urge our Canadian customers to use Priority Post. All plant material is packed and shipped within a 24 hour period. We take pride in our packing but would appreciate if our customers overseas would let us know what condition their plant material arrives in, this will help us in future situations. All orders are shipped in the order they are received. If you are going on vacation or will be away, please note this on your order form so we do not ship to you during your absence. For those of you who write me letters during our shipping season, I must apologize for tardy replies, but I find it almost impossible to correspond during that time. A telephone call will get you a response much faster than me answering letters at that time, but please do not call and ask if this variety or that variety is available, this is why we request substitutes. Substitutes are a necessity, if you don't want to list substitutes then we will substitute at our discretion, so instead of getting duplicates, LIST SUBSTITUTES!! This year I have traveled many a long distance to deliver the Gospel on Gesneriads and it pleases me to do so. My husband I enjoy growing plants just for the pleasure of growing them and bringing them to bloom. When I discover a new species or hybrid in flower it is a major event! I may run a speedy half mile to grab my husband by the arm and drag him into the greenhouse to show him a first time flowering. I'm sure most of us feel that way when we see something flower for the first time and that's why I like to try new plants we have never grown before, so why not try something new and achieve the same thrill. We hope you find our catalogue easy to read, work with and filled with an interesting choice of plants. Again we thank you for thinking of LES VIOLETTES NATALIA and hope to see or hear from you soon. GOOD LUCK AND GOOD GROWING! ----------------------------------------------------------- PLEASANT HILL AFRICAN VIOLETS Route 1, Box 73 Pieper Road Brenham, TX 77833 Please read carefully Dear Violet Friends: We would like to take this opportunity to express our thanks to you--our customers, for your continued support. We appreciate all orders, large and small, and the cards and letters we receive about our plants, leaves, and packaging methods. We strive to do our best. I'd like to say a word of THANKS to my customers for their patience and understanding this past year when my Dad was so ill. My family must come first at ALL times and I do sincerely appreciate your understanding. Currently, we are ONLY MAIL ORDER. We receive requests for visits; however, we have full-time jobs, in addition to the plant business and we are unable to invite visitors at this time. Because it is impossible to know which varieties will be in greatest demand, or if there is a "fail crop" on some, it is possible that on occasion some may be in short supply. Although every effort is made to fill orders without substitution, we do reserve the right to substitute, but will do so only if necessary. Please list acceptable subs. If you do not wish any subs, please advise, and credit will be issued. If no subs are listed, we will select for you. We are offering leaves on many varieties, because of extended absences, I've had a "crop failure". Our shipping season is from the end of April to November 1st. After shipping begins, orders will be shipped as soon as possible, but please allow sufficient time for shipment of back-log of orders that have been received. We start receiving orders in December so it takes a while to catch up with shipment of these orders. After the back-log of orders have been shipped, please allow 6 weeks for delivery, although EVERY effort will be made to ship prior to that time. Please be patient with us during the busy spring and fall shipping season. We give each order special attention and this does take time. Often we cannot devote as much time as we would like to the plant business because of other commitments. We appreciate your understanding and patience. Shipping season ends November 1st. Orders shipped out of season will be shipped at the buyer's risk since we have absolutely no control over the weather. All orders for plant material will be shipped via Priority Mail, or UPS Second Day Air. Postage rates for UPS Second Day Air are slightly more; however we highly recommend shipping this method. Unfortunately, postal charges continue to rise. It is our privilege to offer these wonderful violets to you, and we hope that they will bring you many hours of enjoyment. THANK YOU! My '93 customers overwhelmed me again! Much appreciated orders, notes, cards, and letters were received through out the year filled with enthusiasm from novices to seasoned growers. 'SOMETHING DIFFERENT' was the concensus of opinion...and that's what I like to hybridize...the gorgeous and/or unusual. I'm bracing for '94. In less than two years my home has mysteriously shrunk in size. Either that or the contents have multiplied. Between the parrots and violets, space has once again become an issue. (Most violet growers complain about this chronic problem). Thus, in order to make the best use of available room, I will only have starters (& leaves) of my '94 releases. LEAVES ONLY will be available of all past releases. Even some of my older favorites will have to take a back seat to the new kids on the block! This year I am pleased to present a diverse array of color and foliage...something for everyone from show quality standards, trailers, to minis. Most of these have had the distinct honor of receiving a pigment analysis from DR. JEFF SMITH thus validating their true color. Even the most discriminating buyer will hopefully find a 'jewel' in my list for their collection. Please take a moment to read through the following descriptions. Perhaps a few of my '94 creations will be just right for you! Thanking you in advance for your patronage. Just, Joen Gehr Minimum order $14.00 plus shipping. Orders may combine plants and leaves.
