FNPack Version 1.0á Page 1 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- INTRODUCTION ------------ In continuing to offer the best support for Spitfire, MetaSys is working closely with Buffalo Creek Software to introduce new and improved utilities to the market. There currently are two excellent message packers on the market. SFPACK by Bob Browne is a full featured and quick message packer; however you are required to purchase the UTI for it's use. If you have decided to use SFMail or Jetmail on your system, and you are not running PC Relay related software, to the best of our knowledge, you are not able to get this excellent message packer. SFMSGPAK from Mike Woltz is also an excellent product. However, it does not contain ALL of the features that sysops have requested over time. Due to the immense work involved in releasing a new version of Spitfire, Buffalo Creek Software and MetaSys have agreed to work together to release FNPACK, the FireNet Message packer. If you are running FireNet, you MUST run this packer, as Bob Browne's will corrupt the SFMSGxx.PTR files (Spitfire System Files) created in Spitfire 3.2 and used by FireNet... You will find that many features found in the other message packers are found in FNPACK. Some features were not included while other features have been added. Simply unzip FNPACK.EXE into a directory (preferably it's own). Then, using the following command line, you are able to run FNPACK as an event or from Dos (interactively)! FNPACK /AREA=area /MSGS=xxx /DAYS=yyy /RCVD /SEED All parameters except for /AREA are optional. /AREA= specifies the message conferences to pack. You may specify /AREA=5 to pack a single conference (conference 5 in this example) or you may specify /AREA=2..15 to pack areas 2 through 15. If you need to pack 2 through 15 and conference 20, you must run FNPACK twice. Simply have 2 lines in your SF.BAT (event) as: FNPACK /AREA=2..15 FNPACK /AREA=20 /MSGS=xxx Normally, FNPACK will pack out any messages marked DELETED. By specifying /MSGS=xxx, you are specifying that a maximum of xxx messages be left in the conference. If you want a maximum of 200 messages in any conference, specify: FNPACK /AREA=2..20 /MSGS=200 /DAYS=yyy This parameter specifies that any message older then "yyy" days should be deleted (regardless of whether it was read or threaded). So if you only want the last 30 days worth of messages, simply specify: FNPACK /AREA=5..6 /DAYS=30 If you specify both parameters (/msgs and /days), then you are requesting that any messages older then xxx days be deleted... Also, there should be a maximum of xxx msgs... /RCVD We originally weren't going to place this parameter in FNPACK, but enough have asked . This parameter will always delete any messages that are PRIVATE and marked RECEIVED. /SEED When packing a message area, if the message area is brand new and no .IDX/.PTR/.DAT files are found, OR if they are FNPack Version 1.0á Page 4 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- all zero bytes, then FNPACK will seed these conferences with a single message. So if you have just added a new conference (for example, 25) and you would like a quick way to initialize it, simply type: FNPACK /AREA=25 /SEED FNPACK.LOG Everything that FNPACK does will be recorded in the file FNPACK.LOG. If you would like, you may copy this file to your callers.log with the following command(s): C: (change to the Spitfire drive) CD \SPITFIRE\WORK (change to the CALLERS.LOG directory) COPY CALLERS.LOG + C:\FNPACK\FNPACK.LOG The last line will copy the FNPACK.LOG to the end of the CALLERS.LOG. FNPack Version 1.0á Page 5 --------------------------------------------------------------------------- SUPPORT ------- FNPACK is shareware and is supported by Bob Zimmerman of MetaúSys. If you have a question regarding a feature, first read this documentation. If you cannot find the answer, feel free to contact MetaSys. Many hours of work and design went into this program. Buffalo Creek Software and MetaSys have designed this program to make it the file manager of choice for Spitfire BBS systems. If after using this program for 30 days, you continue to use it, you must register it with MetaSys. The current registration fee is $5. All funds must be in US Dollars! Registered customers are supported by MetaSys. If need be, we can call you and make sure that you get the program running to your satisfaction.
