NETWORK (MULTI-USER) INSTALL FOR MICROSOFT EXCEL 4.0 June 7, 1993 The following details a network install for Microsoft Excel version 4.0 with Windows 3.1 and ARTISOFT LANtastic version 4.x or later. This install is composed of a "Server" install and a "Workstation" install. Check your Microsoft Excel license agreement to make sure you will be in compliance with your license. Contact Microsoft for further licensing information. SERVER INSTALL: The server install option for Microsoft Excel is only activated when it detects that the install directory you specified is a network drive. With this in mind, we will need to TEMPORARILY create a network drive on the server that maps back to itself. It is important to note that this is temporary only (Windows will not load in enhanced mode on the server if you have created a network drive for the server that references one of its own local drives). 1) Net use a drive letter back to the local drive on the server. NET USE C: \\SERVER\C-DRIVE 2) Load Windows in standard mode. WIN/S 3) Use the Window's Progman File Run option to start the Excel setup procedure. On the run line type the following (substituting B: for A: if the B: floppy drive is to be used). A:\SETUP 4) Specify the path for the Excel install, being sure to use the network drive specified in 1) above. C:\EXCEL 5) Select the 'SERVER' Install option from the 3 options presented by the install screen. The setup routine will now copy all the Excel files to the harddisk. 6) Once the install has completed, exit Windows and set the C:\Excel directory to read-only. ATTRIB +R C:\EXCEL\*.* 7) Remove the network drive mapping done in 1) above. NET UNUSE C: 8) The server install is now complete. ALTERNATIVE SERVER INSTALL METHOD (for dedicated servers) 1) From workstation or another server, 'Net use' a drive letter to the server's hard drive. NET USE E: \\SERVER_NAME\C-DRIVE 2) Load Windows (standard or enhanced mode is fine). 3) Use the Progman File Run option to start the EXCEL setup procedure. On the run line, type the following (substituting B: for A: if the EXCEL install disk has been placed in the B: drive). A:\SETUP 4) Continue with steps 4 through 6 listed above substituting the network drive letter used in 1) above for the C: drive (E: in this example). 5) The server install is now complete. WORKSTATION INSTALL (for the server) 1) 'Net use' a drive letter back to the local drive on the server (this drive letter will be used to load Excel for the server each time in the future). NET USE C: \\SERVER_NAME\C-DRIVE 2) Load Windows in standard mode. WIN/S 3) Run the Excel 'SETUP' program from the Excel directory created during the Server install. C:\EXCEL\SETUP 4) When prompted enter the 'workstation' directory for the server. This directory MUST be unique for the user. You DO NOT want to specify the same directory used for the Server install option. C:\XLUSER1 5) Select the 'Workstation' install option from the 3 options the install screen displays. 6) Allow the setup program to modify the autoexec.bat file. This will modify your path statement to include the Excel Server install directory so that the Excel program files can be located when Excel is run. 7) Remove the network drive mapping done in 1) above. NET UNUSE C: 8) Workstation install for the server is now complete. WORKSTATION INSTALL (for the workstations) 1) Login to the server from the workstation. 2) Map a drive letter to the server's drive that contains the Server install of Excel. This drive letter will be used to access Excel from now on at this workstation. NET USE E: \\SERVER_NAME\C-DRIVE 3) Load Windows. 4) Use the Progman File Run option to start the 'SETUP' routine from the Server's Excel directory. E:\EXCEL\SETUP 5) Enter directory to be used by the workstation for the workstation Excel files. This directory MUST be unique for the user. You DO NOT want to specify the same directory as the server install. C:\XLUSER2 or E:\XLUSER2 4) Select the 'Workstation' install option from the 3 options the Excel SETUP displays. 5) Allow the setup program to modify the Autoexec.bat file. This will modify your path statement to include the Server Excel directory so that the program files can be located when Excel is run. 6) Workstation install is complete.
