This is the README file for UMSLIP version 1.9 QUICK START =========== 1) type "slip setup" 2) Press "F4" (Function Key 4) which is 'Modem Setup'. You will then get a dialog box which allows you to set up your modem. BAUD RATE and MODEM TYPE are usually the only settings you will need to change. 3) Confirm your Modem settings by clicking on the "OK" button with the mouse or by pressing Alt-K at the keyboard (Hold down the ALT key and press K). 4) Press "F5" (Function Key 5) which is 'SLIP Setup'. You will then get a dialog box. USERNAME and PASSWORD are usually the only settings you will need to change. 5) Confirm your SLIP settings by clicking on the "OK" button or type Alt-K (Hold down the ALT key and press K). 6) Type Alt-X (Hold down the ALT key and press X) to exit from the Program. 7) type "slip" for information on how to use SLIP.BAT. SLIP.BAT will let you run various programs that require SLIP access. For Example: To run POPmail, you would type "slip popmail" To run Gopher, you would type "slip gopher" To open a telnet session to gold.tc.umn.edu you would type: "slip telnet gold.tc.umn.edu" =============================================================== BACKGROUND This Software replaces SLIPDIAL.EXE and its accessory programs. UMSLIP.COM replaces SLIP8250.COM PHONE.EXE replaces SLIPDIAL.EXE X00.SYS All Script Files This New software distribution was designed to elminate the need for the X00.SYS serial device driver and provide a more user friendly interface for SLIP access. A complete packet driver interface was written to better adapt to SLIP connections and slower serial chips. It is now easier and more intuitive when running software with SLIP. SLIP.BAT is designed to call all the accessory programs in the SLIP distribution: PC Gopher (Provides access to distributed information) NCSA Telnet (Enables users to open direct terminal sessions) FTP (File Transfer Protocol, useful for transfering files) POPmail (Graphical User Interface for reading electronic mail)
