WinBoot Lite Version 1.10 Copyright (C) 1993 Jeff Solomon A PARADIGM Software Release Wednesday, August 4, 1993 Fastart Simply put, WinBoot Lite is a DOS batch file designed to offer you the choice of either loading Windows directly from the AUTOEXEC.BAT file or dropping to a DOS command line. Since it was written in MS-DOS 6.0's batch language (and takes advantage of new commands found only in DOS 6), you need to be running either MS-DOS 6 or IBM's PC DOS 6.1 in order to use WinBoot Lite. To install WinBoot Lite, simply replace the line that loads Windows in your AUTOEXEC.BAT (it should look something like: C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM, or simply: WIN) with a line that loads WinBoot Lite (something like: C:\WBL\WBL.COM). If you don't currently load Windows from your AUTOEXEC, just add the WinBoot Lite line onto the end of the file. Running WinBoot Lite is simple; assuming you add it to the end of your AUTOEXEC, WinBoot Lite will automatically load when you start your computer. All instructions are provided on-screen (hit "W" to go to Windows, "D" for DOS, or "M" for a menu of other options; if you don't do anything, Windows will load after nine seconds). In an effort to keep the size of this package to a minimum, I've cut back on the documentation. I can be reached on Internet as: winboot@aol.com, on America Online under the screen name: WinBoot, and on Prodigy under the ID: GHHB23A. I'll be glad to answer any questions and make any requested enhancements to the program. Thanks for using WinBoot Lite (which is, of course, free for all to use and copy); I hope it proves to be useful. Important Note for Users of Previous Versions WinBoot Lite 1.1, while adding new features not found in prior versions (1.00 and 1.01), continues to offer all of the switches and functions previously available. So while you can now choose from a wider variety of switches, you can continue to use WinBoot Lite exactly as you have before; the program will continue to function in the same manner as it has in the past (if not faster). But take note: The program name has been changed from "WBLITE.COM" to "WBL.COM," so be sure to update your AUTOEXEC.BAT to reflect the new file name. What's New in Version 1.10 While WinBoot Lite 1.1 closely resembles its predecessor (Version 1.01) in both looks and functionality, the program itself has been completely rewritten from the ground up. With a new, "object oriented" structure, WinBoot Lite is now much faster and more efficient than it was in the past. Rather than writing out each possible "path" the program can take (load Windows with a startup screen, load Windows without a startup screen, quit to DOS, etc.), WinBoot Lite 1.10 was programed to perform a small operation unique to the switch chosen, and then return to a previously used portion of code. By "recycling" code in such a way, WinBoot Lite is both faster and more structured, which will make it easier to upgrade in the future since additional switches can be added by simply plugging in a small "object" that is unique to the specific function of the new switch. Version 2.00, which is currently in the development stage, will make further use of the streamlined code pioneered in this version, and will add the functionality of MS-DOS' DOSKey TSR utility.
