DOS 6 BOOKS Reviewed by Hugh Bayless The grand entry of MS-DOS 6.0 into the marketplace has been accompanied by a flash flood of books. Here are the first: PC Magazine DOS 6 Memory Management with Utilities, by Jeff Prosise. The manual that comes with MS-DOS 6.0 pretty much leaves it up to the install program to set up the memory in your computer when you install DOS 6. If you really want to get the most out of your DOS 6 memory, Jeff Prosise tells you how in detail, and supplements that with 14 powerful memory management utilities on disk. If you go to DOS 6, this $29.95 Ziff-Davis book will prove to be one of the best aids you can buy. DOS Inside & Out, Second Edition, by Kris Jamsa, published by Osborne/McGraw-Hill, is an expanded update of of the original top-notch version. Simple enough for the beginner, extensive enough to satisfy the expert, and considering the skimpy manual that comes with DOS 6, this $27.95 book is a very worthwhile addition to your library. PC Learning Labs Teaches DOS 6, is a very complete but basic book and disk learning tool that makes learning DOS 6 quick and easy. For the beginner who really wants to make the best use of DOS, this is an excellent learning tool. Using the book and disk together, the user learns by doing. This $22.95 disk/book combination from Ziff-Davis is highly recommended for any beginner who wants to make the best use of DOS. DOS Made Easy, Fourth Edition, by Herbert Schildt, is an update of his excellent earlier versions, written for the beginner to intermediate user. At $19.95 from Osborne/McGraw-Hill, this is a good book value, but if I were starting off a beginner, I would use the one above, from PC Learning Labs. Simply DOS, Second Edition, by Kris Jamsa, is the Osborne/McGraw- Hill update of the popular illustrated guide for the absolute beginner which we reviewed here in June 1991. It still sells for $14.95. DOS the Pocket Reference, Third Edition, by Kris Jamsa, is another update from Osborne/McGraw-Hill to include DOS 6. It doesn't have any illustrations and sells for $9.95. DOS, the Complete Reference, Fourth Edition, also by Kris Jamsa for Osborne/McGraw-Hill, is the DOS 6 update of his best-selling (350,000 copies sold) monumental (1121 pages) tome. If you want only one reference book on DOS, this $29.95 volume will serve all of your needs and probably more. The Only DOS book you'll ever need, by Doug Lowe, is just about that -- a 610 page book about all versions of MS-DOS through 6.0, written for everyone from the beginner to the advanced user. It starts with the basics and ends with advanced commands, batch files and configuring your system for best results. Amply illustrated with captured screen displays, it truly does cover everything about DOS. It's $27.50 in bookstores, but MBUG members can call the publisher, Mike Murach & Associates, at their toll free number, 1-800-221-5528, mention MBUG and the special promotion code UGDOS, and order the book with a 40% discount, which makes it terrific real bargain.
