In other words the plane can not only fly level but hover, land, and take-off vertically. The thrust from the engine is channeled through 2 outlets on the side of the plane. The outlets can be turned from a horizontal (level flight), vertical (hover), or forward vertical (hover while moving backwards) positions. The system allows the Harrier a short takeoff distance and small landing area. The Harrier is a versatile aircraft but has an extraordinary talent in AG missions. The Harrier is also able to be used close to the front line. This is due to it's ability to takeoff and land in the grass and other rough terrain. It's short takeoff distance also allows for small, makeshift runways in small fields. Spy Reconnaissance SR-71 Blackbird Users: U.S. Type: Spy/Reconnaissance Crew: 2 Min Weight: 67,500 lb Max Weight: 152,000 lb Length: 103 ft, 10 in Height: 18 ft, 6 in Wingspan: 55 ft, 7 in Win Area: 1,795 square ft Made By: Lockheed Engine: (2) Pratt & Whitney J-58 turbojets Top Speed: Mach 3.2 Max Range: 3,745 NM Max Ceiling: 85,000 ft Censor Payload: 3,500 lb Other: The Blackbird is the evolution of the A-12 Oxcart.
