SkyWriter supports Microsoft compatible mouse use. However, it is assumed that the mouse driver is installed by your system, probably at bootup time. Examples: in your CONFIG.SYS file, you may use this entry -- "DEVICE = C:\DOS\MOUSE.SYS" or in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file you may insert a line -- "MOUSE" or "MOUSE.COM". Of course, these files must be available in the path specified. Consult your DOS (tm) user's guide for more details. [If you use MS-DOS 5.00 Dosshell, read this: There appears to be a bug with the DOSSHELL distributed with MS-DOS 5.00 which starts applications without restoring the proper interrupt pointer for mouse functions. Thus, to run SOS or DEMO under MS-DOS 5.00, exit from DOSSHELL via F3 first.] With hard drive C: and assuming the SkyWriter is on A:, install SkyWriter as follows: >C: >MD \SKY >CD \SKY If your copy is received as a zipped file: >PKUNZIP -d A:SKY100.ZIP NOTE: The "-d" above is very important to recreate the directory tree. If your copy is received in non-compressed form (no .ZIP files): >XCOPY A:*.* C:\SKY/E/S/V With the working directory (or active drive) set to the location of SkyWriter files, type DEMO & Enter, for a demonstration during which you do NOT have to type anything further. Or type SOS & Enter to start system under your control. Best wishes and Thanks! [If you wish, SOS or DEMO can be run from a 360K floppy disk.] Please contact me for help or customizations: J.KEENE4 on GEnie. Call (609) 953-7205 or write 130 Hiawatha, Medford Lakes, NJ 08055. This demonstration or "try it" software provides everything you need to write and use programs in the SKYWRITER Language using the Format program. However, two items are not included in this demonstration package: 1. The OUTPUT printout option on the SOS main menu is a useful utility to print databases and/or copy them to another directory. The latter function is useful where a particular .SKY program only uses some of the menu files in a directory in which case the OUTPUT option will copy the .SKY program and only the menus that particular program uses. 2. The Language translation feature is an additional program available from CIA. Basically, two parallel databases in different languages are used to write in one of the languages (e.g., English) but output text in another (e.g., Spanish). CIA routinely provides assistance for users to get started with SkyWriter. You can call for help or even send examples of the documents you wish to implement with SkyWriter and we can help you use Format to set up a skeleton of the .SKY program and database for the application. Please note that the SKY databases that YOU write are your property. Often SKY applications are called "SkyWriter Expert Systems" because the database can reflect significant knowledge in a particular field. There is the opportunity that CIA will market on your behalf your databases. Simply submit them to CIA for review. (In the near future a SKY BBS will be online).
