MICHAEL BARRETT Senator Michael Barrett is a Democratic candidate for governor. He served three terms in the House of Representatives (1979-1985) and is completing his fourth term in the state Senate. Throughout his legislative career, Mike has been a passionate voice for quality human services: ù Year after year Mike has won budget amendments to increase state funding of pregnancy counseling and family planning programs. ù In 1989 Mike launched the Caregivers Campaign to address the shortage of workers in human service careers. He served as Senate chair of a Special Commission on Worker Availability for Long-Term Care. In addition, Mike is a founding member of the Older Workers Task Force. ù Mike has consistently received high ratings from the Massachusetts Human Services Coalition. ù Mike has been a co-sponsor of the Child Care Linkage bill. ù Mike was the chief Senate sponsor of successful legislation protecting the mentally ill against discrimination in housing. ù Mike has received many awards and honors for his advocacy of human services. Most recently he was named "Legislator of the Year" by the Mass. Developmental Disabilities Council. In 1992 he was honored by the Mass. Family Planning Association, in 1990 he received the Fair Housing Award from Boston's Fair Housing Commission, in 1989 the Harry Dow Memorial Award for Distinguished Service to Older Bostonians, in 1988 the Government Award from the Mass. Mental Retardation Providers Council, and that same year the Community Award for Services to Youth from Cambridge Family and Children's Services.
