1.0 System Requirements

To run MaxMate Viewer for DOS, you need the
               following:

                  MS-DOS 3.1 and above
                  Personal computer using a 286
                  microprocessor or higher
                  640 Kb of memory
                  1 Mb available disk space
                  VGA or SVGA monitor

Typically, MaxMate Viewer for DOS requires
about 400K of available memory to run. For
very large MaxMate files, it may require
               more memory.

2.0 Installing MaxMate Viewer for DOS

MaxMate Viewer for DOS can be installed
locally on your hard disk or in a shared
               configuration on a network.

     2.1 Local installation

To install MaxMate Viewer for DOS on a local
               disk:

               1. Insert the MaxMate Viewer for Windows and
DOS disk into your floppy disk drive.

               2. Run the INSTALL program from the floppy
                  disk drive.

For example, if you inserted the MaxMate
Viewer disk into drive A:, you would type
                  A:INSTALL to run the installer.

               3. To complete installation, follow the
                  instructions on the Installer screen.

     2.2 Shared network installation

Shared installation consists of two parts.
The network administrator first sets up
               a shared network directory. Then,
individual users set up their own local
               workstations.

To set up on a shared disk (for administrators):

               1. Insert the MaxMate Viewer for Windows and
DOS disk into your floppy disk drive.

               2. Run the NINSTALL program from the floppy
                  disk drive.

For example, if you inserted the MaxMate
Viewer for Windows and DOS disk into drive
A:, you would type A:NINSTALL to run the
                  installer.

               3. To complete installation, follow the
                  instructions on the Network Installer
                  screen.

During the installation process, you must
specify a directory in which to store MaxMate
Viewer files. You should ensure that the
specified network directory resides on a
shared volume which other users can access.

               To complete the workstation installation
               (for each user):

               1. At a workstation, run NMAXVIEW.EXE from the
                  shared network directory.

For example, if your shared network
installation of MaxMate Viewer for DOS resides
in the N:\MV directory, the following command
                  line would be used.

                  N:\MV> NMAXVIEW

                  The Workstation Installer runs
automatically and a title screen is
                  displayed.

               2. Click on Continue to acknowledge the title
                  screen.

               3. Enter a directory name on your local hard
disk to store temporary files or press
                  Enter to accept the default.

This directory will also contain the file
MAXVIEWD.BAT which you can use to launch
MaxMate Viewer for DOS from the DOS command
                  line.

The Workstation Installer asks you if you
                  want your AUTOEXEC.BAT file updated
                  automatically.

               4. Click on Yes to change the AUTOEXEC.BAT file.

The Workstation Installer adds a line setting
your VMV environment variable in DOS. For
example, the following line might be added
                  to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file:

                  SET VMV=C:\MV

               5. Click on Continue to acknowledge the
                  change.

You are put into MaxMate Viewer for DOS. If
you do not wish to it at this time, cancel
out of the Open dialog box and exit the
                  application.

3.0 Running MaxMate Viewer for DOS

You can run MaxMate Viewer by running the
program MAXVIEWD.EXE from the DOS command line
or from your electronic mail package.

     3.1 Command line

Specifying a filename on the command line
launches MaxMate Viewer for DOS and opens the
               specified file automatically. For example,
the following command line might be used to
view the MaxMate file C:\MAIL.MAX using a
               local copy of MaxMate Viewer:
               C:\MV> MAXVIEWD C:\MAIL.MAX

     3.2 Electronic mail applications

Some electronic mail programs allow you to
associate an attachment file type with a
               particular application. This section provides
information on how to configure some
electronic mail programs with MaxMate Viewer
for DOS. If you are unsure of how to
configure your electronic mail program, contact
               your e-mail administrator.

          3.2.1 Lotus cc:Mail for DOS

Lotus cc:Mail refers to a special
               configuration file, often called CCMAIL.INI,
for site-specific settings. Contact your e-
mail administrator if you do not know the name
of the configuration file at your site.

The [Application Integration] section of the
               configuration file stores the associations.
You should associate the file extension MAX
with the pathname for MaxMate Viewer for
DOS. The following is an example of a
CCMAIL.INI entry for a shared installation of
               MaxMate Viewer for DOS:

               [Application Integration]
               MAX=M:\MV\NMAXVIEW.EXE ^.MAX

3.2.2 Da Vinci eMAIL for DOS

Da Vinci eMAIL refers to the file MAIL.INI for
user settings. The associations for Da Vinci
eMAIL are stored in the [DOS Viewers] section
               of the configuration file.

You should associate the file extension MAX
with the pathname for MaxMate Viewer for DOS.
You should allocate approximately 400K to run
MaxMate Viewer from within Da Vinci eMAIL.
The following is an example of a MAIL.INI
entry for a shared installation of MaxMate
               Viewer for DOS:

               [DOS Viewers]
               MaxMate Viewer = F:\MV\NMAXVIEW.EXE %1;400;MAX

4.0 Using MaxMate Viewer for DOS

               This section contains information about
running MaxMate Viewer for DOS with other
               devices or applications.

     4.1 Compressed volumes

MaxMate Viewer for DOS interacts with a local
disk cache to manage temporary files during
use. For performance reasons, you should not
install MaxMate Viewer for DOS on local
volumes compressed with utilities such as
               Stacker or DoubleSpace.

You may also notice degradation in performance
when opening and saving files to compressed
               volumes.

     4.2 Microsoft Windows

Visioneer recommends that you use MaxMate
Viewer for Windows when running in the
               Microsoft Windows environment. However, you
can run MaxMate Viewer for DOS in full screen
mode under Windows. You should not try to run
MaxMate Viewer for DOS in a window.

     4.3 Printing to files

You can redirect the output of your print
commands to files. Use the Print to File
button in the Print dialog box to specify
               a filename.

5.0 Sample Files

Included on your MaxMate Viewer for Windows and
DOS disk are sample documents created using
MaxMate. To install these files, copy all
MaxMate (*.MAX) files to your hard disk.
