For very large MaxMate files, it may require more memory. 2.0 Installing MaxMate Viewer for DOS MaxMate Viewer for DOS can be installed locally on your hard disk or in a shared configuration on a network. 2.1 Local installation To install MaxMate Viewer for DOS on a local disk: 1. Insert the MaxMate Viewer for Windows and DOS disk into your floppy disk drive. 2. Run the INSTALL program from the floppy disk drive. For example, if you inserted the MaxMate Viewer disk into drive A:, you would type A:INSTALL to run the installer. 3. To complete installation, follow the instructions on the Installer screen. 2.2 Shared network installation Shared installation consists of two parts. The network administrator first sets up a shared network directory. Then, individual users set up their own local workstations. To set up on a shared disk (for administrators): 1. Insert the MaxMate Viewer for Windows and DOS disk into your floppy disk drive. 2. Run the NINSTALL program from the floppy disk drive. For example, if you inserted the MaxMate Viewer for Windows and DOS disk into drive A:, you would type A:NINSTALL to run the installer. 3. To complete installation, follow the instructions on the Network Installer screen. During the installation process, you must specify a directory in which to store MaxMate Viewer files. You should ensure that the specified network directory resides on a shared volume which other users can access. To complete the workstation installation (for each user): 1. At a workstation, run NMAXVIEW.EXE from the shared network directory. For example, if your shared network installation of MaxMate Viewer for DOS resides in the N:\MV directory, the following command line would be used. N:\MV> NMAXVIEW The Workstation Installer runs automatically and a title screen is displayed. 2. Click on Continue to acknowledge the title screen. 3. Enter a directory name on your local hard disk to store temporary files or press Enter to accept the default. This directory will also contain the file MAXVIEWD.BAT which you can use to launch MaxMate Viewer for DOS from the DOS command line. The Workstation Installer asks you if you want your AUTOEXEC.BAT file updated automatically. 4. Click on Yes to change the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. The Workstation Installer adds a line setting your VMV environment variable in DOS. For example, the following line might be added to your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: SET VMV=C:\MV 5. Click on Continue to acknowledge the change. You are put into MaxMate Viewer for DOS. If you do not wish to it at this time, cancel out of the Open dialog box and exit the application. 3.0 Running MaxMate Viewer for DOS You can run MaxMate Viewer by running the program MAXVIEWD.EXE from the DOS command line or from your electronic mail package. 3.1 Command line Specifying a filename on the command line launches MaxMate Viewer for DOS and opens the specified file automatically. For example, the following command line might be used to view the MaxMate file C:\MAIL.MAX using a local copy of MaxMate Viewer: C:\MV> MAXVIEWD C:\MAIL.MAX 3.2 Electronic mail applications Some electronic mail programs allow you to associate an attachment file type with a particular application. This section provides information on how to configure some electronic mail programs with MaxMate Viewer for DOS. If you are unsure of how to configure your electronic mail program, contact your e-mail administrator. 3.2.1 Lotus cc:Mail for DOS Lotus cc:Mail refers to a special configuration file, often called CCMAIL.INI, for site-specific settings. Contact your e- mail administrator if you do not know the name of the configuration file at your site. The [Application Integration] section of the configuration file stores the associations. You should associate the file extension MAX with the pathname for MaxMate Viewer for DOS. The following is an example of a CCMAIL.INI entry for a shared installation of MaxMate Viewer for DOS: [Application Integration] MAX=M:\MV\NMAXVIEW.EXE ^.MAX 3.2.2 Da Vinci eMAIL for DOS Da Vinci eMAIL refers to the file MAIL.INI for user settings. The associations for Da Vinci eMAIL are stored in the [DOS Viewers] section of the configuration file. You should associate the file extension MAX with the pathname for MaxMate Viewer for DOS. You should allocate approximately 400K to run MaxMate Viewer from within Da Vinci eMAIL. The following is an example of a MAIL.INI entry for a shared installation of MaxMate Viewer for DOS: [DOS Viewers] MaxMate Viewer = F:\MV\NMAXVIEW.EXE %1;400;MAX 4.0 Using MaxMate Viewer for DOS This section contains information about running MaxMate Viewer for DOS with other devices or applications. 4.1 Compressed volumes MaxMate Viewer for DOS interacts with a local disk cache to manage temporary files during use. For performance reasons, you should not install MaxMate Viewer for DOS on local volumes compressed with utilities such as Stacker or DoubleSpace. You may also notice degradation in performance when opening and saving files to compressed volumes. 4.2 Microsoft Windows Visioneer recommends that you use MaxMate Viewer for Windows when running in the Microsoft Windows environment. However, you can run MaxMate Viewer for DOS in full screen mode under Windows. You should not try to run MaxMate Viewer for DOS in a window. 4.3 Printing to files You can redirect the output of your print commands to files. Use the Print to File button in the Print dialog box to specify a filename. 5.0 Sample Files Included on your MaxMate Viewer for Windows and DOS disk are sample documents created using MaxMate. To install these files, copy all MaxMate (*.MAX) files to your hard disk.
