But do you know about the other Tibetan Language Broadcasters? Because of the way shortwave radio signals bounce off the ionosphere, you may be able to receive some of the programs listed below. Please keep in mind, however, that your reception will depend on many variables, such as the distance from the transmitter, fluctuations in solar activity, atmospheric conditions, interference from other broadcasts, and even jamming. Times are given in Universal Time Coordinates (UTC) beginning with the earliest broadcast of the day in Tibet. Following the list are some brief notes about the broadcasters. The compiler realizes that this is by no means a comprehensive list and, in order improve future editions, would greatly appreciate any additions, suggestions, corrections, or comments. Television and radio programs produced in Beijing are relayed to various regional stations via the Chinasat 5 satellite (115.5E) on the C-band at 3.843gHz. ***** The Voice of America 330 Independence Ave, S.W. Washington, DC 20547 USA Since beginning with daily fifteen-minute broadcasts on March 25, 1991, the Tibetan Service of the VOA has become the major alternative to Chinese government broadcasts for news. Now, broadcasts have been expanded to forty-five minutes twice each day. Programs produced in Washington are relayed (via satellite?) to 500kW transmitters in Wertachtal, Germany (G.C: 10.41E/48.05N) and to 250kW transmitters in Tinang, the Philippines (G.C: 120.37E/15.21N). Due to persistent jamming, frequencies and times are changed fairly often. ***** Sichuan People's Broadcasting (Sichuan Renmin Guangbo Diantai) 119-1, Hongxing Zhonglu Chengdu, Sichuan, China Provides locally produced programs in Kham dialect as well as relaying Central People's Broadcasting from Beijing. ***** Qinghai People's Broadcasting (Qinghai Renmin Guangbo Diantai) 96 Kunlun Lu Xining, Qinghai, China Provides locally produced programs in Amdo dialect as well as relaying Central People's Broadcasting from Beijing. ***** Gansu People's Broadcasting (Gansu Renmin Guangbo Diantai) 49 Renmin Xijie Hezuo Zhen, Xiahe Xian, Gansu 747000 China Provides locally produced programs in Amdo dialect as well as relaying Central People's Broadcasting from Beijing. ***** All India Radio Broadcasting House 1 Sansad Marg, (P.O. Box 500) New Delhi 110-001 India All India Radio broadcasts Tibetan language programs for domestic and external audiences. ***** Bhutan Broadcasting Service P.O. Box 101 Thimpu, Bhutan Bhutan Broadcasting Service broadcasts in dialects which can be understood by many speakers of Tibetan. ***** Gaweylon FEBA Radio P.O. Box 6 New Delhi 1 India Far East Broadcasting Association (FEBA) is a Christian organization broadcasting short programs in an impressive array of Asian languages, including Tibetan. The Tibetan service, begun on 1 November 1990, produces the 30-minute program "Gaweylon" (Good News) in New Delhi. The 100kW transmitter is located in the Seychelles at G.C: 55.28E/04.36S. ***** Trans World Radio (TWR) India L-15, Green Park New Delhi 110016 INDIA Trans World Radio (TWR) is a Christian organization broadcasting in over 90 languages, including Tibetan. The International Headquarters are in North Carolina in the US, but the Tibetan programs are produced in New Delhi and broadcast from a transmitter located in Russia (in Irkutsk?). ***** Central Broadcasting System 55 Pei An Rd, Ta Chih Taibei 10494 Taiwan Republic of China Taiwan's Central Broadcasting System broadcasts programs in a variety of languages spoken in China, including Tibetan, over its sixth network.
