Infection with HIV results in diminished cellular immunity, propensity to opportunistic infections, and an increased incidence of certain neoplasms. Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) is the most common neoplasm in persons infected with HIV. This epidemic, or HIV-related KS, usually follows an aggressive course with involvement of skin, lymph nodes, and internal organs. Normally, the disease has a progressive clinical course despite being responsive to radio- or chemotherapy.
