Specimens obtained with the OraSure oral specimen collection device have been extensively tested for the detection of antibodies to HIV and other viral infections. An HIV-1 WB was developed for the confirmation of the immunostatus of OraSure specimens. To evaluate the performance of this WB, paired serum and oral samples collected from 226 seropositive and 204 seronegative subjects were tested. The serum specimens were tested using an FDA-licensed HIV-1 WB kit; the matching OraSure specimens were tested using the OraSure WB assay. Among the 226 confirmed seropositive samples, the OraSure HIV-1 WB was positive for 224 samples and indeterminate for the remaining two. No false negative samples were observed. None of the 204 specimens identified as HIV-1 non-reactive by EIA testing was found to be positive by either the OraSure HIV-1 WB or the licensed serum WB.
