Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ASM94/94313105 AB Serum specimens from 304 patients and 116 blood donors were tested for HIV-1 antibody using the Murex SUDS HIV-1 and the Genetic Systems LAV EIA test systems. There were 320 specimens non-reactive with both SUDS and LAV (116 blood donor specimens and 204 patient specimens). There were 53 patient specimens which were reproducibly reactive by LAV and confirmed as positive by both Western blot (WB) and immunofluorescence (IFA). All 53 of these specimens were reactive by SUDS (100% sensitive). Of 47 specimens reproducibly reactive by LAV but unconfirmed by WB and IFA, the SUDS test was reactive in only 4 instances. The overall results of this study demonstrate that SUDS was 100% sensitive (53/53) and 98.9% specific (363/367) and indicate that the Murex SUDS HIV-1 antibody test system may be acceptable for rapid screening in specific situations.
