SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(2):194 (abstract no. PB0789). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94371412 AB OBJECTIVE: To study the pathological changes and opportunistic infections in kidney. METHODS: Kidneys from 55 cases (20 HIV infection, 35 AIDS) were studied by routine H & E and special stains (PAS, PASM, GMS, ZN) to evaluate glomerular, tubular, interstitial and vascular lesions along with infective pathology. RESULTS: Renal pathology was not identified in any of the 20 cases of HIV infections. 24 of 35 (68.6%) cases of AIDS showed infective pathology which included 17 cases of renal mycobacteriosis (48.5%), 5 cases of mycotic infection (3 cryptococci, 2 candida) and 2 cases of CMV infection. Other noted lesions were amyloidosis and tubular calcinosis. None of the cases showed lesions of HIV associated nephropathy. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Opportunistic renal infection was the commonest finding and was seen only in full blown AIDS cases. Renal mycobacteriosis was the predominant infection. None of the cases were IV drug users which probably explains the absence of HIV associated nephropathy in the present study.
