To improve and promote our HIV prevention action, of which antibody testing is considered one of the most important anti-HIV measures, we made an survey on personal background of HIV test examinees. METHODS: During the period from April to December 1993, 3204 examinees took HIV antibody tests at 16 Municipal Health Centers in Yokohama City. Before testing, questionnaires were distributed to examinees, asking items on sex, age, date of last HIV antibody test, reason of taking HIV antibody test and need to pre-test counseling. RESULTS: Males occupied 66% of examinees. Age of 20's and 30's were 74%. Those who had ever been tested HIV antibody were 18%. As for the reasons of taking HIV antibody tests, the sexual contact were 64%, and the anxiety about infection from the spouse were 13%. Thirteen percent of examinees wanted to have pre-test counseling. The average interval from the last test was about 1 year. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: By the end of 1993 the total number of examinees was 14860, which is only 0.63% of the population of the age group of 15 to 64 years in Yokohama City. Examinees who received repeated HIV tests were mostly young adults of 20's and 30's, and 75% of them had an anxiety about sexual transmission. These results suggest that more intensive and effective AIDS prevention education and counseling services should be carried out for the public, particularly for the young adults.
