Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370188 AB OBJECTIVES: To carry out a preliminary study of the prevalence and epidemiological characteristics of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in low-income women in Rio de Janeiro. METHODOLOGY: Between November 1993 and February 1994, a sample of 198 women aged 14-46 years, who attended 2 public health centres in Rio de Janeiro for gynecological consultation, and who received a pelvic examination, were included in the study. Endocervical swabs were taken for Chlamydia trachomatis testing using the Syva Microtrak II Chlamydia EIA kit. Standardised questionnaires were used to record sociodemographic data, medical and social history, and clinical examination findings. RESULTS: The overall prevalence of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in the study population was 8.1%. Prevalence was found to be associated with age, with an infection rate of 12.2% in women aged 14-25, in comparison to 5.7% in women aged 26 and over. CONCLUSIONS: The results presented here, which represent preliminary findings from a larger study in progress, suggest that the rate of Chlamydia trachomatis infection in female users of public health centres in Rio de Janeiro is comparable to that found in similar settings in other countries.
