Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370140 AB In order to study HIV prevalence and infections with related transmission mechanisms, we interviewed and bled 199 IDUs from the city of Santos, Sao Paulo state, Brazil. Seroprevalence of HIV, Hepatitis B and C, syphilis and HTLV-I were assessed and compared with 199 control individuals matched by age and sex from the city main blood bank. The table shows the seroprevalence results: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. It can be noted from the table the extremely high seroprevalence to HIV, HCV, HBV and HTLV-I found in this community. On the other hand, syphilis has shown a not so high seroprevalence as those described for communities with high sexual risk behaviour. In addition, it is clear from the data that there is a much higher risk for the infections with parenteral transmission than that which is sexually transmitted. It is clear form the results that although this IDU community has a high sexual risk of HIV transmission, parenteral transmission is remarkably higher, as compared with the general population. In conclusion, our results point to the fact that, in communities of IDUs with such a transmission profile, control measures should be directed mainly to parenteral aspects of transmission, without leaving aside the sexual ones.
