Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370099 AB The increased number of subjects infected heterosexually has aroused considerable interest in the type of sexual intercourse involved, particularly anal, which is believed to be the one with the greatest risk. 174 HIV+ subjects and their sex partners were observed at the Institute of Infectious Diseases at the University of Rome La Sapienza. Their sexual behaviour was analyzed subdividing the couples according to whether transmission had occurred or not. The results are shown below in the table: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. The data indicate that the practice of anal sex is that which determines the greatest risk in heterosexual intercourse. Transmission occurred in 42% of couples who had had anal intercourse vs 30% of those who had had only vaginal intercourse. Analysis of condom use in relation to sexual practice shows that irregular use in anal intercourse determines the transmission in 61% of cases against 37% of those who had had only unprotected vaginal intercourse.
