India being one of the most populous country in this region was considered a significant contributor to it. The purpose of this work is to evaluate the potential for the epidemic development. METHOD: Basing on the demographic data, we stratified the country population into several groups with various frequencies of HIV risk practices and quantified these groups. The data available on the prevalence rates and progression of HIV infection in each group were used for the judgement on the potentials for HIV spread. RESULTS: The groups analyses included: (a) female sex workers; (b) clients of FSW's in the cities; (c) intercity truck drivers; (d) female sex workers serving intercity truck drivers; (e) injecting drug users; and (f) men who have sex with men. The population not included in these groups of high risk were treated as the general population. The HIV prevalence rates currently reported for each group were extrapolated to determine the present magnitude of the epidemic and HIV infection progression rates were used for the projections. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSION: The amount of individuals with HIV in India places this country at a leading place for the absolute number of HIV infections in one single country. Through the rates are lower than in thailand or in African countries. The combination of the high absolute prevalence and rapid increase of the rates observed in female sex workers, injecting drug users and truck drivers as well as in the general population observed in limited areas offer a good potential for developing a major HIV epidemic in this country.
