Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370054 AB OBJECTIVES: To estimate HIV seroprevalence among individuals with possible high risk behavior who visited regional health center in Japan for HIV antibody testing. METHODS: This study was done in collaboration with fifteen municipal institutes of health covering each regional health center situated in different prefectures in Japan. Since 1986, HIV antibody tests of individuals with possible high risk behavior were performed at the municipal institute of health by EIA or PA and confirmed by Western Blot. RESULTS: Since 1986 to date, 252,799 were tested for HIV antibody and 127(0.05%) were seropositive. HIV prevalence increased from 0.02% (1987) to 0.05% (1993), and it was especially high in Tokyo and Kanagawa areas.
