SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):284 (abstract no. PC0058). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370050 AB OBJECTIVES: To assess the prevalence of antibodies against HIV-2 vis-a-vis HIV-1 antibodies in different risk groups from western India. METHODS: More than 1000 blood samples each of the risk groups viz. patients attending STD clinics and female sex workers were collected between 1989-92, principally from Bombay and Pune, but other cities of western India were also represented. 63 sera from homosexuals from Bombay and 84 professional blood donors from Surat were also tested. RESULTS: Among the STD and female sex workers, the HIV-1 seropositivity was 70 and 259 respectively; HIV-1 WB showed 62 and 241 positives. HIV-1+2 ELISA showed 102 and 342 positives; by the line immunoassay 60 and 231 were positive for HIV-1 respectively; 2 and 23 sera were positive for HIV-1+2; 5 and 22 sera were positive exclusively for HIV-2. Of the 63 homosexuals 10 were positive by ELISA and WB, by the line assay 8 were positive for HIV-1, and 2 were positive for HIV-2 and 2 for HIV-1+2. Of the 85 professional donors from Surat, 60 were positive by ELISA, and 54 were positive for HIV-1 by line immunoassay, 2 were positive for HIV-1+2. DISCUSSION: HIV-1 has been increasing relentlessly in high risk groups, now HIV-2 is also found in a substantial proportions in different risk groups in different cities of western India. A substantial proportion are dually reactive. It seems that HIV-2 positivity is making in roads from the ports to the inland places. The situation in professional donors is alarming in Surat.
