SO Int Conf AIDS. 1994 Aug 7-12;10(1):283 (abstract no. PC0055). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370045 AB OBJECTIVE: To describe the epidemiological characteristics of HIV/AIDS infection in Lebanon. METHODS: The socio-demographic and risk factors of all HIV positive or diagnosed AIDS cases reported to the National AIDS Control Program in Lebanon between 1984 and 1993 were analyzed. RESULTS: Some local transmission of HIV has been reported since the first Lebanese AIDS case in 1984. Local transmission affects mainly women (15% of 236 cases of HIV/AIDS) and new-born children (n = 9). Heterosexual Lebanese men, 80% of whom are returning emigres remain the main source of infection in Lebanon. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: A national response is being developed taking in account the sociocultural characteristics of the emigres risk group. Plans are being implemented to increase the reporting of cases, the control of the epidemic and the prevention of new cases.
