PC0037). Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94370027 AB OBJECTIVE. To determine the trends among rural AIDS cases. METHODS. Analysis of the AIDS Registry. RESULTS. Up to Jan. 1994, 17,387 AIDS cases have been notified, 644 (4%) cases have been notified among peasants. Site of residence are traditional regions that send migrant laborers to the USA. Transmission categories are: Heterosexual 34.1%, bisexual 22.2%, Homosexual 13.1%, recipients of transfusion 10.9%, expaid blood donors 1.8%, IVDU 1.5%, homo-IVDU 0.6%, unknown 15.9%. Trends of rural cases is as follows: TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. CONCLUSIONS. AIDS epidemic in Mexico is extending to rural areas. Introduction of the epidemic is probably related to labor migration to the US and heterosexual and bisexual practices. Urgent measures are needed among this population regarding information on mechanisms of transmission and provision of condoms.
