Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369966 AB In 1970 the local government of Jakarta province, Indonesia, has established a rehabilitation center for female commercial sex workers (FCSW) in Kramat Tunggak, to give them some limited vocational training. An infrequent AIDS prevention education is also given as a separate program. So far, these separate and unlinked educational methods have given no meaningful change on the FCSW's lives or their STD/AIDS related high risk behaviors. This paper proposes a contextual approach in giving STD/AIDS prevention education to FCSW in Jakarta, using Kramat Tunggak as a pilot project. OBJECTIVE: To enable them to successfully make aware decision whether to leave prostitution and make reasonable future plans, or to stay in this profession but take precautions to protect themselves from STD/AIDS. METHODS: Using the adult learning method the FCSW will be trained to analyze the risks and benefits of their profession versus other professions, and to set up future plans and actions to achieve them. STD/AIDS prevention will not be the focus of the training, rather as one of the tools for them to reach better lives. Training to communicate the knowledge to peers and clients will also be given. This program is planned to start in January 1995.
