Examination was essentially normal except for the presence of an optic neuritis, with visual acuity limited to hand movement only. Positive investigations included the presence of a VDRL titre of 1:32 with a positive TPHA and a CSF VDRL titre of 1:1. The patient was diagnosed to have optic neuritis secondary to syphilis and treated with high dose crystalline penicillin with remarkable improvement of his visual acuity.
