Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369812 AB OBJECTIVES: To determine the presence of antigens (Ags) and antibodies (Abs) for type 1 HIV in serum, saliva and gingival fluid in patients in stage 6 Walter Reed (WR) classification; and to describe the spectra of oral lesions. METHODS: 25 male patients who met the criteria of the WR6, attending the infectious disease Clinic, accepting to participate, underwent extensive evaluation and X rays. Saliva was obtained with a Pasteur pipette, gingival fluid was collected with filter and nitrocellulose paper. Blood was drawn in the same visit. Ags were determined by ELISA (Organon) and Abs by ELISA (Behring) a qualitative result was obtained in both tests. TABULAR DATA, SEE ABSTRACT VOLUME. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The presence of HIV Ags in the gingival fluid was found in 12% of these patients with advanced disease and 12% additional in saliva for a total of 24% in oral fluids. The Abs in saliva were present only in half of the patients, cautioning reliability of saliva as a diagnostic tool. Extensive periodontal damage is present in most of the individuals at this stage of HIV infection. Interestingly hyperpigmentosis was present in the majority of our patients contrary to reports in the literature which regarded it as a rare condition.
