Unique Identifier : AIDSLINE ICA10/94369793 AB OBJECTIVE: To test the hypothesis that non specific intensive immunotherapy may be helpful in the treatment of AIDS. METHODS: Twenty patients with AIDS not in the terminal phase of the disease were treated with weekly injections of typhoid vaccine (Catapano's Protocol). Clinical evolution and lab parameters were evaluated at monthly intervals for 1 year. No other therapy for AIDS was given with the exception of medication for opportunistic infections. RESULTS: Clinical Observations: Resolution of fever and night sweats shrinking of enlarged lymph nodes, reduction in size and number of Kaposi's Sarcoma lesions, return of appetite, weight gain, resolution of fatigue and weakness, marked improvement in AIDS dementia. Laboratory observations: Elevation of the total white, lymphocytic and platelet counts, raise in hemoglobin, rise of CD4 count. Side effects were not significant. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: Further studies of this therapeutic modality alone or in combination with other agents would appear warranted.
